Intern at the department of Parasitology Diagnostics at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp. The study aimed to develop a new, without using animal models, diagnostic test for sleeping sickness to replace the card agglutination test for trypanosomes. This was done by the production and purification of the recombinant proteins LiTat 1.3 VSG, LiTat 1.5 VSG and TgsGP in the yeast Pichia pastoris together with an optimisation of the culturing conditions. During the study, ten different constructs containing TgsGP, LiTat 1.3 or LiTat 1.5 were designed, transfected in two P. pastoris strains, cultured with different conditions and purified using several methods. In the end, the diagnostic value of the recombinants was evaluated with human sera resulting in recombinants with sensitivities and specificities of 95-100% and good diagnostic potential. Thesis: Optimisation of production and purification of T.b. gambiense-specific proteins in Pichia pastoris for the development of a diagnostic test for sleeping sickness Show less

Stigma Assessment and Reduction of Impact (SARI) project investigate the effectiveness of three leprosy related stigma reduction interventions. The research, as a part of the intervention: contact between affected persons and the community, aimed to let leprosy affected children and non-affected children together develop contact materials about their experiences with leprosy and perceptions on leprosy. These contact materials, in the form of comics and board games, were developed during several focus groups and presented to their friends, family, teachers and others in the community. Thesis: Leprosy through the eyes of children. Affected and non-affected children develop comics and games about leprosy for others in the community. Show less
