As part of my two MSc programs, I’m doing a yearlong research internship at the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health (DSBG) of the University of Basel. I’m assisting in a study to the efficacy and feasibility of a physical activity counseling module on sleep, cognitive functioning and psychopathology in a transdiagnostic sample of psychiatric adolescent outpatients. The research internship is supervised by Dr. Christin Lang. Research at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Wilhelmina kinderziekenhuis (WKZ). Under supervision of Dr. Jeroen Dudink and MSc Xiaowan Wang. Practical work and thesis were graded as belonging to the Top 10%. Identification of sleep and wake states is important for the clinical and neurophysiological assessment of infants born preterm admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). As the importance of different sleep stages on neurodevelopment and long-term prognosis is currently unravelling, there is a high demand for quantification of sleep stages. Electroencephalography (EEG), especially two-channel amplitude-integrated EEG, is a commonly used neuromonitoring tool in daily care of preterm infants due to its ease of use. During my internship, I aimed to investigate whether quantitative EEG (qEEG) measures can differentiate the different stages of sleep in very and extremely preterm infants. During my internship, I also collaborated on multiple scientific papers, among which a scoping review on behavioral sleep stage classification methods (BSSC) for preterm infants. Also, I collaborated in the development of a new BSSC, with high reliability and validity. Show less
