The Nanjing Internationalism Programme plucks students from the familiarity of their normal school and family routines, placing them into an environment that deliberately challenges and inspires understandings about themselves, of other people and the world itself. The students’ mode of learning is experiential - they learn by doing. As an Activity Teacher, I am responsible for guiding the students through an experience based academic programme, providing a cultural experience in a Chinese setting. While the 5-week programme is unashamedly designed to be a provocation, it is also a personal inquiry about what interests the students as well as what challenges them personally. I am also a residential educator - the warmth and purposefully designed residential boarding environment offsets the provocation and challenge by developing feelings of camaraderie, care and a strong sense of community.
