On patient forums, patients share a wealth of experiences and information on adverse drug effects and coping strategies. Using text mining and cross-linking to curated knowledge, we will investigate how and if we can glean innovative, clinically relevant hypotheses from this data. This would both empower patients and provide direction for future clinical research. During this research internship, I conducted research into synaptic pathology and regeneration using immunohistochemical techniques on both human post-mortem brain tissue and animal models of MS. I learned to work with confocal microscopes and set up the analysis protocol for counting synaptic proteins using MATLAB and ImageJ. They will be decided upon their courses for the remainder of their high school that year. On the Beta Day, they will follow four interactive workshops with different themes throughout the day. During this internship, I studied the functional connectivity of patients with a primary glioma using language fMRI scans. Specifically, I researched the possible predictive value of functional connector hubs in their brain networks for clinical outcome measures.This was in line with my strong interest in translational neuroscience. During these 6 months, I gained work experience in the use of Linux, FSL and Matlab.
