In this position I have been responsible for carrying out animal husbandry activities to ensure the wellbeing of two-fingered and three-fingered sloths within our care, who are in the process of rehabilitation from their injuries or illnesses. The goal is to release all animals who are receiving treatment in our facilities, once they have reached a healthy weight and are sufficiently able to look after themselves in the wild. My responsibilities have included carrying out health checks, collecting and preparing food to substitute a natural diet for sloths in the wild (largely consists of cutting leaves from different trees), assisting veterinary treatment such as intravenous fluids, subcutaneous injection, and assisting during surgery including an amputation procedure. I have also participated as a data collector in TSI's ongoing research project regarding the behaviour of sloths post-release once they are back in the wild. This role has involved locating and studying individual sloths for periods of several hours, using a handheld Biotracker which can locate a given radiocollar of any collared sloth. One key aim of this study is to shed light on how sloths behave in the wild, and to use this information to improve conservation practices on animals in rehabilitation. Show less

By working with green and hawksbill turtles in the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica, I have gained valuable insight into the biology of turtles and their ecosystems, and learned what we can do to protect them. During my role at LAST, I was responsible for monitoring turtles in the wild, removing parasites, caring for injured or sick turtles in our rescue centre, working in mangrove reforestation projects, planting out new seedlings, and leading groups of volunteers in turtle monitoring and mangrove reforestation activities. This also gave me the opportunity to improve both spoken and written Spanish, and practise effective communication between members of our team as well as international volunteers - as well as becoming more familiar with Spanish from countries outside of Costa Rica, including Nicaragua and Chile. I also became far more confident and independent from this experience, learning how to raise awareness and encourage others to help us to protect the endangered sea turtles - for example, I led talks with volunteers about the importance of our project, assisted in a demonstration with an audience including associates of National Geographic, and led groups in environmental clean-up activities such as beach cleans and sorting rubbish at the peninsula's recycling centre.
