•Provides professional investigation to at risk children and their families as reported to the Sheriff's Office by outside sources, e.g., abuse hot line, neighbors, schools, parents, law enforcement agencies; performs ongoing assessments as dictated by the specific circumstances of each case.•Makes contacts with families regarding allegations of abuse, neglect, maltreatment, substance abuse and/or abandonment of children.•Conducts interviews, risk/safety assessments, and home studies to address issues raised; determines findings; reports information and indications of abuse, neglect and/or abandonment into Florida Abuse Hotline Information System and other systems.•Conducts diligent searches to locate emergency placement with relatives or other appropriate persons in cases where children have been identified as at risk; conducts diligent search for parents and/or relatives as applicable to each case.•Conducts relative, non-relative and home studies prior to establishing emergency placement.•Makes safety determinations and implement necessary safety actions in conjunction with law enforcement and licensing authorities on cases involving institutional settings (e.g., schools, child care environments, etc.).•Engages and explains child protection mandates and services, and all applicable rights and responsibilities to affected parties in child protective investigations.•Assesses and implements safety plans when warranted by present or impending danger threats and ensures transfer of family to ongoing case management.•Provides information and referrals to outside community, social service agencies, and related resources; assesses family for federal funding eligibility.
