Ann Baillie is an intelligent young woman with clear goals for her professional future. It was my privilege to create an Independent Study Course at LHS in which Ann worked in the LRC as an intern. Whether assisting with classroom instruction, creating promotional materials or assisting with library management, Ann always worked with speed and precision. An intuitive librarian in-the-making, Ann asked critical questions and sought to understand the principles and practices employed in running a successful high school library. I anticipate her applying these same skills in every new professional opportunity she is privy to explore.

As a UK 101/201 Peer Instructor Liaison, I worked to improve the experiences of Peer Instructors and students taking UK 101 and 201, the University of Kentucky's Orientation to University class. I aided in interviewing and selecting Peer Instructors for the upcoming academic year and with reviewing and editing lesson plans for the class. During the Fall 2016 semester, I worked with a group of current Peer Instructors to help answer their questions about teaching UK 101 and improve their teaching experience.

    • Common Reading Experience Ambassador
      • Aug 2015 - Dec 2016

As a Common Reading Experience Ambassador, I helped new and returning students learn more about the Common Reading Book by creating programming based around the book and facilitating discussions about the book. I also helped run the annual Author Lecture, a full-day event in which the CRE book's author or authors meet a variety of students, faculty, and staff before giving a large lecture in the evening to over 2,000 students. In the 2015-2016 academic year, the CRE book was "Picking Cotton" by Jennifer Thompson and Ronald Cotton. In the 2016-2017 academic year, the book is "Orphan Train" by Christina Baker Kline.

    • Peer Mentor
      • Aug 2015 - May 2016

As a Wired Peer Mentor, I helped a group of 100 first and second year students adjust to the University of Kentucky by creating programing that combined social interaction and academics in the residence hall. In addition, I worked one-on-one with a group of seven freshmen with whom I developed close personal relationships. The programing I and the other peer mentors created focused on showing the value of a liberal arts education to the new students.

I aided in running regular story times and special events, and also ran four programs by myself from planning to clean-up. One of these programs had more than fifty patrons participate. I also worked the Kids' Reference desk, where I answered basic reference questions and gave out prizes to Summer Reading participants. I managed Teen Volunteers who acted as helpers during various programs.
