When working with Anita, I had the rare treat of watching efficient, empathetic and effective leadership in action. To me, she is a role model for how a leader can be. She is tech savvy, customer focused, very humble, assertive, compassionate and very easily approachable. She thoughtfully creates this space of support and trust in which every team member feels valued and feels very safe to learn their way through and grow. She has an amazing knack for helping you see your strengths and contributions. And the way she delivers constructive feedback is most empathetic and ends up being most effective for growth. I have admired as to how she could be a mentor, manager and a friend all at the same time and be really effective in every role. An opportunity to work with Anita is an opportunity I would never ever miss in the future.

Over my 9+ years at HomeAway / Vrbo, I've worked with Anita in a variety capacities. She was a fellow engineer when I first joined the team, working across the aisle (literally) on related products. When Anita moved into engineering management, I soon reported directly to her -- and as Anita's leadership skills and responsibilities grew, she helped grow my career as well. First, as a tech lead and later as an engineering manager myself. In parallel, Anita was also building, running, and (later) overseeing HomeAway University -- our intern and recent college graduate orientation and technical onboarding program. Once again, Anita brought me and my career along for the ride, first allowing me to co-lead the Summer 2013 program and later allowing me to run the entire Summer 2019 program. I'm not sure where my career would be without Anita's guidance and leadership, but it almost certainly would be in a lesser state, without as many rewarding and enriching experiences. It's hard to explain the impact working with (and for) Anita has had on my career and my life. She is the most empathetic engineering leader I've ever had the pleasure of working with. There have been too many times to count in both my professional and personal life where Anita has had the patience to listen, ask questions, and lead me to discover the path I needed to take. I can't think of a single problem -- whether it is technical, personnel, and/or product related -- that Anita can't handle or hasn't already handled. She has a wealth of professional and personal experiences that allow her to participate in meetings with engineers who have their noses buried in the code as well as meetings with C level executives who don't even know what an API is. She has the unique personality and skills to be a leader, a manager, a mentor, a coach, and a friend all at once and any company would be fortunate to employ someone 10% as great as Anita, much less Anita herself. I imagine that someday somewhere someone will write the book on the history of the vacation rental industry, the rise of HomeAway, Airbnb, etc and Anita will feature prominently. It's truly been a blessing -- and I don't use that word lightly -- to work with Anita for the past 9+ years and I hope that every engineer gets the chance to work with her at some point.
