During this work experience, I am researching and exploring the different roles available in law and learning how to perfect a personal statement. I am also amending commercial contracts and preparing a business development pitch to gain an idea of the work that lawyers at the firm encounter daily. As a member of the Society of Labour Lawyers, I have assisted in advising the shadow cabinet international trade team on provisions included in trade agreements around the world, covering human rights, Labour standards, environmental standards, and climate change. This work was conducted in order to see to what extent there are precedents that the next Labour government might consider adopting in these areas when it comes to negotiating trade agreements. Fragomen's immigration law school gave me a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the industry and gain exposure to career opportunities. During my time here, I took part in workshops, worked on cases concerning immigration law and regulations, worked in recruitment and explored Fragomen’s service offerings. At Allen and Overy, I had the privilege of working in the FinTech and Environmental Sector. This included: Advising a major telecommunications provider on launching a wide range of new payment services, electronic money, and a "buy now pay later" product. In particular, this involved: considering how to migrate millions of customers in both a legal and practical way from a suite of unregulated products to regulated products; and discussing how to deal with the practicalities when migrating customers, e.g. new "know your customer" checks which might need to be performed, when migrating customers; Assisting on a due diligence exercise in relation to the acquisition of a major pan-European retail and business banking group. In particular, this involved: questioning the client in relation to its correspondence with regulators, whether its products fall within the regulatory perimeter, its product manufacturing process, and whether it has any material complaints from customers; reviewing internal and external audit reports, related management information, and board minutes; performing independent research in relation to the claims filed by material customers in relation to the business; Considering the arrangements between a major multinational retail platform and one of its merchant acquiring partners. In particular, this involved: considering the use of credit cards, in particular the potential issues which might arise where there are chargebacks or refunds; and discussing potential liquidity issues which could arise where e.g. merchant acquirers might "hold back" funds during times of economic hardship. I was intrigued to work with Browne Jacobson as they are the UK's number one employer for social mobility. I spoke to solicitors about their work and the routes they took into law. This allowed me to conduct a research report on which barriers exist in law and how to overcome them. Here I learned about criminal law and was fortunate enough to witness advocacy. I particularly enjoyed assisting in conducting evidential analysis and drafting summaries of evidence. Whilst assisting a client on their plea, I helped to advise against the use of an "equivocal plea" by a client who wanted to finish the process urgently due to a drug addiction. Here I saw first-hand that, without the support of legal aid, a client would have faced a far harsher sentence. These types of social injustices inspired me to learn more about the problems facing our legal system. Show less

May 2018 - May 2019
Whilst working here, I conducted general administrative work, scanning, and filing. I also input data, for example putting information into mortgage applications and carried out client verification work, for example verifying identify (passport, social security numbers) using appropriate software for anti-money laundering processes. I attended client investment review meetings throughout my time here. In these meetings, I mostly conducted polite conversation with clients, for example, asking about other members of the family and its history, which helped them feel comfortable, whilst also obtaining general factual information, such as the date of birth, how long they have lived in their current house, which family they have, and whether they live together. In addition to this I acquired the sensitive information required, by asking in a non-intrusive manner, for example, medical history issues, which helped me to build rapport with clients. The skills I learnt here are very much applicable when attending to clients in the field of law, whether that be in a 1:1 meeting, or when collecting personal data essential to contracts, agreements, and cases.
