Average Mark: 91 Group literature review: T Cells in the Pathophysiology of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Abstract: Type 1 Diabetes (T1DM) is a chronic disease caused by the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells by T cells, leading to the lack or absence of insulin production. T cells, a type of lymphocytes utilized by the immune system, and specifically Cytotoxic (CD4+) and Helper (CD8+) T cells, are the ones that carry out such autoimmune responses. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) serve as regulators of the immune responses carried out by other T cells, and their dysfunctions destroy the self-tolerance and homeostasis of the body and lead to excessive autoimmune destructions towards the body’s own pancreatic islets and their pancreatic beta cells. The T Cell Receptors (TCRs) may also be weak in strength, leading to Treg dysfunction. TCR signaling plays a pinnacle role in regulating T cell homeostasis activation, expansion, and effector function upon the recognition of self-antigens, and studies show their strength may intensify the symptoms of T1DM. Most severe symptoms of the disease can be managed through existing surgical procedures such as insulin therapy, pancreas transplantation, and islet transplantations. Studies assess the effectiveness of such methods of management, and due to limitations in research, there are flaws in most processes such as organ rejection. All this information derived from research and studies shows how crucial it is to preserve well-functioning T cells and how there must be further research conducted on human cells in order for research on cures of the disease to advance.
