I have worked for Bibby Hydromap Ltd where I assisted them in defining their SBP analysis processes using Kingdom and SeismicDirect. I developed a processing strategy for tracking the processing stages and developed a number of velocity models that fed into the ground model deliverables for their client Ørsted. I also assisted them with SBP data visualisation techniques for identifying navigation errors within the SEGY headers, allowing gigabyte datasets to be assessed in a few hours. These techniques were coded with Python and the segyio libraries. Latterly I have been a Client Representative contracted by Lloyd’s Register on a number of projects in the North Sea, including 3DUHR sparker data acquisition and QC. Additionally, I have worked in a consultancy role evaluating geological and geophysical datasets for high-level wind-farm foundation feasibility assessment within search areas around the UK When not working for clients I have continued in the development of seismic processing and visualisation tools using Python and Lazarus (Object Pascal). I have focused on tools that could be used offshore for rapid QC, currently I am particularly interested in 2DFFT visualisation of seismic panels. I have developed a nyquist visualisation methodology based on the acoustic analysis principles.

I led geochemical, geophysical, and geotechnical campaigns in The South Atlantic, South America, West & South Africa, Northern Europe, The Arctic, Morocco, and Canada. These included site, pipeline route, UXO, sampling and geochemical surveys. I was the technical lead offshore and often acted as Party Chief. Frequently the nature of the contracts required fast turnaround of data to provide hazard assessments in near real time which I routinely undertook during demobilisation. Apart from the standard tools available I developed a statistical based assessment methodology for gas risk analysis working in parallel with accepted methods using Kingdom. I developed a magnetic data analysis methodology initially using Python and GIS but later transferring to a cross platform executable written with Pascal in Lazarus. The software was used by the company to produce estimates of magnetic anomaly source enabling quantification of mass and burial depth for spatially aliased magnetic data typically acquired from site surveys allowing complete analysis to be provided at the Field Report stage.I developed a deep understanding of bathymetric principles developing GIS based filtering techniques written as add-ons for the SAGA GIS software suite, the add-ons are now distributed with this package by the developers. I used these algorithms in the field to assist in bathymetric processing. I developed latency detection methodologies for understanding and locating navigation data ‘bottle-necks’ within vessel systems. This was often a critical problem on bare metal mobilisations where systems had to be installed from scratch. In addition, I implemented heave and tide assessment methods to compliment and compare with the traditional tools available in commercially available software (eg EIVA), allowing additional corrections to be computed for bathymetric data.I also managed the company data servers and backup strategies both on vessels and in the office.

Together with a team I evaluated client requests for tender and developed cost models for Directors to establish a pricing strategy prior to bid submission. I inherited an already sophisticated model and at the request of the Directors introduced risk based cost modelling for issues such as weather, downtime, and confidence based risk together with cash flow forecasts embedded in the model for rapid assessment of bid viability. I introduced document collaboration and authorisation using the company’s SharePoint system allowing multi-site contributions from technical teams.

Delivery of consultancy and research projects. These projects were based around using geophysical techniques such as GPR, time domain thermography, acoustic response, and cross hole tomography (seismic) to provide insights into the performance of buildings and to assist in establishing reasons for structural failure. I subsequently became an Expert Witness where my legal specialism was Structural Geophysics. I was promoted and became Director of Construction Consultancy with a team of approximately 40 staff providing building forensic investigations, expert witness services, and research projects across the group. Many of the projects required innovative solutions that required bespoke software solutions unavailable in the market.
