Civic Analytics Fellow
-
Feb 2020 - Aug 2020
In the first half of this data science Fellowship, I utilized Natural Language Processing and machine learning tools in Python to derive 37 standard citizen complaint categories from 7700+ unique ones, amassed over 25 North American and Canadian cities that implement the non-emergency citizen inquiry system 311. Cities include New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Edmonton, Calgary and more. This project advances the efforts to highlight algorithmic biases within public resource allocation, and my work introduces a coherent look into the diverse and complex public service delivery system within and between cities concerned. In the second half, I conducted an analysis on pre and post covid differences in citizen reporting, focusing on New York City and on social distancing complaints. Show less

Agile Software Engineer Intern
-
May 2018 - Aug 2018
In my 3.5 months at GovTech, I created a Java API server to expose a device farm with the help of a co-intern and mentors. I wrote Java Servlets, Bash, Ansible and cURL scripts. Designing ways for subsystems like Java and terminal processes to communicate, I worked in both Linux (Fedora) and MacOS command line environments and utilized Vagrant to box and provision virtual machines. In this role, I also practiced Scrum ceremonies in an Agile working environment, experienced pair programming and gained communication skills. I also * Learnt about different technologies on the market, attended tech sharings and conferences * Got a peek preview of DevOps life * Received generous help from the GovTech community * Met inspiring people, some who also became great friends Show less
