Graduation: Design and Development of a Crawler Robot for Wind Turbine Applications
-
Jan 2021 - Jun 2021
As my graduation assignment, I was given an opportunity to design and develop a new crawler robot for the inspection and repair of fibre-reinforced plastics on wind turbine blades. The original design had some limitations in stability, surface damage and adaptability to curved surfaces attributed to the wheeled mechanism of locomotion. Consequently, a legged alternative was desired to overcome the aforementionned weaknesses. The result was a four-legged model with three degrees of freedom per limb. This allowed for a range of motion that could cover the surface geometry of a wind turbine blade. Furthermore, it incorporated an independent control of pneumatic adhesion at each leg-end to enable locomotion and provide the stability that the previous model lacked. Locomotion over curved surfaces was enabled by a three-axis suspension system at the end of each leg that allowed the robot to sense the orientation of the blade at a given location and adjust accordingly to ensure optimal adhesion. The design and development of this robot involved CAD, mechanical and structural calculations, electronic design, programming and pneumatics. Show less

Internship Innovation Studio Delft
-
Sep 2018 - Feb 2019
Internship at Innovation Studio Inholland. Feasibility study of an electrically propelled alternative to ACERO Project (jet-powered wing pack). An early-stage concept was developed for electric propulsion and compared to ACERO in terms of performance, costs, safety and other aspects. Recommendations were made for further development of the product. Internship at Innovation Studio Inholland.
