It was evident that food insecurity was the top priority. Through long-standing relationships, I was able to quickly establish programs that helped provide food security for our communities most vulnerable. Miami-Fort Lauderdale Area Under new ownership and leadership, I took on the challenge of developing a Youth Baseball department that focused on providing opportunities for youth to play baseball and softball while engaging with the Miami Marlins throughout their youth. The goal was to ensure that every child playing baseball or softball in South Florida had a direct experience with their hometown Major League team. Programs were designed to follow the lifecycle of a child, from Tee-Ball through high school, taking into account all socio-economic backgrounds and physical abilities. New programs included the Miami Marlins Tee Ball initiative, Youth League Days, Youth Player of the Game Spotlights, the HSBN All-Star Game, and Miami Marlins Youth Tournaments. The relationship with USA Baseball was strengthened and we provided local opportunities through Fun at Bat and Community Coaching Clinics. The Fun at Bat program was adopted by MDCPS and reached over 90,000 students across the district in the first year. In addition to the newly developed program, existing programs were also wrapped in, including Field of Dreams, youth clinics, the Youth Baseball Invitational and all MLB Youth Programs such as Jr. RBI, RBI, Pitch Hit & Run, Jr. Home Run Derby and the Play Ball Initiative. A focus on programming with Special Olympics, Challenger Baseball, Miracle League and the Baseball Fantasy Camp For Kids ensured youth with physical or intellectual challenges had opportunities to enjoy the game of baseball.
