Driven, honest, visionary, empathetic, and reflective are a few of the words that come to mind as I think of Angela Raphael. I first met Angela a few months into my MHA at the George Washington University as part of the alumni mentorship program. At the time, she lived in Atlanta, and I just started my journey in Washington, D.C. While I did not know the lasting role Angela would play in my life, I remember leaving our first mentorship call feeling hopeful, energized, and supported as I walked into the unknowns of graduate school and ultimately the beginning of my career. Angela has been a mentor of mine now for over 3 years and counting, throughout which she has coached me through not only my graduate studies, but also the numerous adjustments and life lessons that accompany the transition from being a student to a young professional. By sharing her own life experiences, Angela has inspired me to recognize what I strive to become as a leader in healthcare, as well as how to make progress towards my personal goals. One of the most admirable qualities Angela has as a mentor is her ability to truly make you feel heard and understood. From this place of understanding and empathy, Angela has a way of thinking through creative solutions that unravel any problem or goal and allow you to recognize how to turn even life’s challenges into growth experiences. Angela has taken on the role of mentor when guidance was needed, coach when a plan/vision and the execution of that plan was needed, and a teacher when life challenged me and I needed someone to guide me through those lessons - her words of encouragement were always a much needed light in those moments. Additionally, her vast experience in healthcare gives Angela a powerful toolkit that is invaluable to those she shares it with. As a healthcare professional, Angela has demonstrated her ability to lead within various hospital settings from Johns Hopkins to Emory Healthcare and within professional networks, such as NAHSE. Her desire to continue learning and challenging herself has led her to cross into both traditional and nontraditional healthcare roles, and this eagerness to continue growing has a way of making it to those around her - Inspiring them to never remain stagnant, and if a shift is necessary, to embrace the seeming discomfort and go after what will truly bring you fulfillment. Angela has this rare quality of making you recognize what you are truly capable of. A quality that encourages you to think big and out of the box and to unlock your full potential. Angela’s energy is contagious and leaves people feeling lighter, understood, and encouraged. Whether Angela serves the role of a coach, mentor, teacher, boss, or friend, she will undoubtedly have a positive and lasting impact on the lives she touches just as she has had on mine. I am so very grateful our paths have crossed.
