I developed software for an e-commerce application: collaborative purchaser/supplier disputes in a B2B billing application. It involved electronic negotiation in order to settle disputes during the pre-delivery and post invoicing phases in a retail environment in order to decrease the issuing of credit notes after invoicing. I worked in a consortium (Knowledge-based Engineering, Deloitte and ISIS) on a G2 scheduling system that used GANTT-charts to assist the human scheduler to plan optimized schedules for the different workcentres in the Saldanha Steel supply chain. This scheduling system used the theory of constraints as heuristic to predict schedules, which could be modified by human schedulers. I designed and developed the reactive scheduling module that automatically re-scheduled the predicted schedules of the workcentres whenever deviations from the planned schedule were detected. The scheduling system had to react to many unpredictable events and uncertainties in the production environment. Events from the plant-floor had to be handled in real-time. Deviations that were detected included time deviations and route deviations. It was undesirable to reschedule from scratch in such cases. Since the different workcentres were prepared for the predicted schedule it was important to change only those features of the schedule that were necessary. This module also provided user interfaces that enabled the human schedulers to correct the planned schedules manually. I was involved in the difficult integration between SAP, ORACLE and G2. I designed and developed the database used by the development team of the Health Monitoring Unit (HMU) of the Rooivalk Attack Helicopter. The HMU was a diagnostic system that monitored the health of the helicopter. I designed and developed a C Code Generator under Microsoft Access Basic. This code generator extracted information from the HMU database and generated C programs implementing selected models in the HMU database. The C programs were compiled and downloaded into the embedded PSOS environment that constituted the helicopter HMU. I was part of a team of three software engineers that developed a demonstrator under PSOS in which three interconnected computers were used to exercise and test real-time and multiprocessing principles. Research and Development: During this period, I was involved in various research projects, including: - TIPS (Transputer Inference Processing System) - Image Understanding Research - SAFEPARK - a Numberplate Recognition System - various small research tasks, for example pattern recognition on radar images, ECG signals & speech Show less

I developed TIPS (Transputer Inference Pocessing System). This transputer-based system did high speed pattern recognition on a large number of real-time inputs. This system was developed in C on VAX computers, from where it was downloaded to the transputers. This project formed the basis of my MSc Research.
