Here, I worked within the Psychology department. I studied the entrainment of circadian rhythms in hamster and mouse models, by behavioural and pharmacological techniques, under the supervision of Dr. Stehany M. Biello. My work investigated changes within the serotonergic input to the circadian clock with age, and was funded by the charity organisation Research Into Ageing. During my undergraduate degree, I worked in industry for one year. Here, I tested for functional consequences of c-Src inhibition, using an in vitro pharmacology set-up, working with isolated tissues. I tested a c-Src inhibitor (lead compound) against different contractile agents, investigated its effects on different smooth muscle types and confirmed the sensitivity of the systems to Ca2+ antagonism. This 12-month placement was within the Cancer and Infection Research Area at AstraZeneca, Alderley Park, Cheshire under the supervision of Jon 0. Curwen. My thesis was titled "Investigation of the role of c-Src kinase in smooth muscle function". Show less
