I am delighted to provide this recommendation for Andy Rogers, an outstanding graduate of the Department of Biochemistry & Cellular & Molecular Biology at the University of Tennessee. These are words that come to mind when I think of Andy Rogers: creative, passionate, energetic, motivated, hard working, talented, articulate, organized, smart, caring... I was Andy’s academic advisor in the Department of Biochemistry & Cellular & Molecular Biology and when I first met Andy he felt torn between his love of science with aspirations for a possible career in medicine, and his love of musical theater. Together we devised a curriculum that would keep him on the premed track but also allow him to minor in Theater. On his own, Andy figured out a way to unite these two disciplines in a creative way that would ultimately benefit humankind. He laid out a plan that would allow him to undertake an independent study on the biochemistry and latest research into possible cures of Type 1 Diabetes, and at the same time worked on developing a musical production about T1D. The independent study resulted in a research paper on T1D, and the musical production became the marvelous musical

Andy Rogers is one of the most talented, hard-working, intelligent, funny, passionate, and remarkable people I know. I helped promote his musical "Andy and the Beats" when he was a full-time student at the University of Tennessee. Andy created "Andy and the Beats" from his biochemistry thesis about the causes of Type I Diabetes. He was able to artfully use theater to explain the science behind the causes of Type I Diabetes and illustrate the struggles of children living with the disease using both comedy and sentiment. The show was such a success, he was able to reprise it and filled one of Knoxville's most renowned theaters the following year. Andy is a triple threat. He can act, sing, and dance. But clearly he is much more than that. He has the intelligence to explain extremely complicated subjects in understandable terms. He has the passion to do right by the community—donating all the proceeds of the musical to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He has the drive to create and coordinate a really complex task—while being a full-time student! And he has the effervescent personality that fills a room. It was a joy working with Andy and I know this is just the beginning of his great success.
