Head Nurse (Acting)
-
Oct 1991 - Nov 1992
I was accountable for the management of a 10 station haemodialysis unit, which was staffed by 25 personnel. The staff were multicultural, hence communication was of paramount. importance In this post we did not have junior doctors hence the Head Nurse’s responsibility expanded into the medical province.. Implemented meetings Established Communication was achieved by the nursing team discussing patient care at each dialysis session. This was a good tool for staff to appreciate the problems associated with chronic renal failure and learn how to care for their patients. The wider aspect of ward management were communicated by the implementation of monthly ward meetings. Staff were free to put forward constructive suggestions on how to improve patient care. And staff working conditions. Minutes were available. Each nurse was responsible for a group of patients using an individualised approach to nursing care using Orem’s model. I implemented a teaching programme for the commission of 10 new dialysis machines. I was a member of the Transplant committee, my role was to carry out the investigations, education and documentation for the patients. Show less
