Following qualification as a solicitor in November 1999, I spent one year in the Admiralty department of HFW London before being posted to HFW Singapore for two years followed by HFW Hong Kong for three and half years. I was a key member of the firm’s Asian crisis management team, responsible for attending throughout the Asia Pacific region to investigate maritime casualties, including collisions, groundings, salvage cases, oil pollution and storm damage. Acting for a variety of international and regional clients including major ship owners and managers, charterers, P&I Clubs, insurers and salvage companies. In July 2005, I returned to HFW London and then spent four and a half years in a similar role, including handling Admiralty cases and conducting casualty investigations in Europe, South America, the USA, the Caribbean, South Africa, South East Asia and the Middle East. In January 2010, I rejoined HFW Singapore as a Senior Associate, continuing to act for shipowners, charterers, P&I Clubs and hull and machinery insurers in relation to casualties throughout the Asia Pacific region. After leaving the Royal Navy, I lived in St. Petersburg for two months to learn basic Russian and then travelled across Siberia and China to work in Hong Kong. In 1995 I worked for five months in Hong Kong as a consultant writer for the public relations department of AT&T Asia Pacific. At the time mobile telecommunications services were expanding rapidly in Asia generally and in China in particular. I wrote and edited press statements for the launch of new products, editing the regional electronic in-house newsletter and preparing monthly mission statements for the director of the Asia Pacific region.
