At Topcon Healthcare Solutions, I work as an optical research scientist in the R&D team to develop state-of-the-art ophthalmic medical imaging devices to visualize the retina. My primary job function involves evaluating system costs, building prototypes, and quantifying imaging performance to create novel ophthalmic devices, such as optical coherence tomography and fundus cameras. I work extensively with optical design software (Zemax Opticstudio) to design fixation targets, low-light imaging systems, illumination systems, and laser scanners to advance new product development for ophthalmology applications. I also determine the design specifications and work with industry suppliers of CMOS image sensors, LEDs, superluminescent diodes, galvanometers mirrors, fiber optics, optical lenses, and gratings for the next generation of medical devices at Topcon. I was responsible for the design, construction, and operation of a high-power laser system at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. This involved interfacing with large teams of scientists, engineers, technicians, and machinists. I developed a number of computational scripts and analytic equations to analyze and interpret the data. The results were organized and communicated to the scientific community through 10+ conference presentations and three peer-reviewed journal articles.• A member of a 30+ international multidisciplinary team to develop the first laser plasma amplifier that will enable the next generation of high-intensity laser systems• Worked with a team of scientists to develop the physical understanding and theoretical tools necessary to plan the experimental platform capabilities• Point of contact for 10+ engineers, technicians, and machinists• Organized, prioritized, and tracked the project's timeline• Communicated expectations and coordinated with mechanical engineers, optical engineers and vendors to obtain and track several hundreds of optics, optomechanics, electronics and hardware in a timely manner• Wrote operational procedures for the optical subsystem, software controls, and vacuum system• Expertise in pneumatic systems, electronic controls and vacuum systems in a clean room environment• Designed, constructed, calibrated and operated 10+ optical diagnostics and a gas cell target• Built numerous fiber optic systems requiring assembling, striping, epoxying, cleaving, polishing, and aligning optical fibers• Developed the MATLAB based data acquisition system• Utilized MATLAB, FRED, and OSLO to select necessary optical and optomechanical components• Wrote MATLAB scripts to process, fit, and visualize time-resolved spectroscopy, interferometry, angular filter refractometry, and polarimetry• Utilized image processing algorithms such as registration, edge and peak detection, noise reduction, and Fourier filtering Show less
