Library Assistant
-
Aug 2012 - Nov 2020
I work at a premier location in the wonderful New Brighton Library which is located at the end of New Brighton Pier and looks out upon the Pacific Ocean. I can check the surf everyday while I work among the colourful, creative and eclectic community of New Brighton of which I am proud to be a part. I work with a lovely group of colleagues who defy the media stereotype of a librarian. They are quirky and creative and supportive of one another. Each has a strong personality and each brings different strengths to our common purpose of serving the citizens of Christchurch and visitors to our city. Show less

Volunteer Telephone Counsellor
-
Aug 2006 - Nov 2012
After 3 months extensive training, I began counselling people over the telephone for Lifeline Christchurch. Skills required to be an effective telephone counsellor include good listening, the ability to establish rapport, empathy and the ability to look dispassionately at issues in people's lives and reframe them to give that person a sense of hope and optimism. What does Santa Claus normally do? Sit children on his knee, get their Christmas wish-list and have a photo taken with the child and then give them a lolly and tell them to behave so they get presents on Christmas night. I performed the lead role in Josh Bridgman's poignant short film about a father who has to reconcile with his gay son after the son attempts to kill himself. The film was based on a short story and it was called "A Man's Sort of Man". It can be viewed on YouTube.
