I did a full-time co-op term here January through August 2019, continued part-time from Sept. 2019 through April 2020, and then came back full-time through August 2020. I learned a lot working here. On the technical side, I had the opportunity to learn & work with Angular and Swift , and most recently I got to brush up on React.js, learning to use React Hooks in the process, as well as installing and configuring Apache servers. Thanks to MEDIC, I now also understand how to use source control (git) as part of a team, which is very valuable. But most importantly, working with clients and working within a team, I discovered that my extensive background in customer service and management is every bit as valuable in software development as my coding and problem-solving skills. (Also of note: by the end of my full-time term, our small team had completed an iOS app which was approved by Apple for the App Store!) Show less

I had the opportunity to learn a lot more about educational principles regarding very young children as I looked after toddlers full-time, teaching them English but also taking care of their most basic needs throughout the day. At Berlitz I often taught business English for corporate clients, which exposed me to the Japanese business culture much more than anything before it had. Also, while working at a junior high school for Berlitz, I learned a lot about organization within a team of teachers, as well as receiving a crash course in Adobe Photoshop. On top of developing my teaching techniques and learning new ones over this nine-year period, I also learned a lot about customer service as we created tailor-made lesson plans and courses for students of all ages in various situations. I was able to solve problems creatively by coming up with my own custom lesson content, catering to the individual students enrolled in each course. In co-developing curriculum here, I also capitalized on my written communication skills and my capacity for logical thinking. Show less

May 2000 - Dec 2005
At my first full-time teaching job in Japan, I applied teaching techniques I had learned in Canada, and became comfortable teaching the target language (English) without using the students' native language. I learned to connect with people of all ages (1 to 92!) and abilities, which also helped me greatly develop my ability to shift contexts many times in a day. After my first year here, I was also given the opportunity to demonstrate managerial skills by training new instructors and taking on a position as liaison between the teaching staff and management. Importantly, I also learned a great deal about the Japanese culture in these five years, which led to me learning a lot more about my own Canadian culture. It served to open my mind to many new ideas, professionally and personally. Show less

Manager
-
Oct 1992 - Apr 2000
Managing a staff of around 10, I learned a lot about effective training techniques and team motivation. I also came away from these eight years with very well developed customer service skills. Our store was in an area with a very mixed customer demographic, so my staff and I needed to be able to relate to people of all ages and walks of life. We also needed to determine what people wanted, even when they weren't sure themselves - as was often the case in the stressful month of December every year. This led to my staff and me receiving showers of customer accolades year after year, as well as awards for top sales in the region every year that I was there. Show less
