Biology is study of all living things…AND how they interact with each other. This “Tree of Life” illustrates the connections between all organisms as branches and limbs sprout out from a central trunk. In this course, we will examine certain themes that also connect these organisms on an intellectual level in the hopes of understanding how life works. You must look at the biological world through several lenses… one minute you are zoomed in on hemoglobin at the molecular level. Admiring the protein’s four-chain structure, you now realize how important this transporter is. It carries something crucial to the process of making large amounts of ATP, our own kind of Duracell… only rechargeable! The next minute you are zooming out to look at a Cuttlefish and how its strategy of mimicry and distraction makes it one of the “weirdest” invertebrates in the ocean. Biology is about strategy; every organism has one… only some work better than others in a certain environment. Biology is about protein; the Michael Jordan of molecules… life and its Three Flows do not happen without them! Finally, Biology is about the abnormal; the lampcillus is a freshwater mussel…. this organism grows a “fake fish” out of its rear end to ensure its parasitic stage of its life cycle continues! This is only the beginning... The "Story Approach"- Our main resource is Carbon and coli., a collection of biology stories that take the student on a curious journey through life. We will be supplementing this primary book with The Living World (TLW on syllabus); which is a traditional biology textbook with great illustrations and review material. Together these resources provide the student with the necessary means to not only learn major concepts in biology, but to apply them in the real world! It provides a truly wonderful platform for teaching biology and an even better one to learn from. Show less
