Hitchhike explores how hitchhiking shapes the lives of creative people. Through conversations with former hitchhikers, framed as rides in a fictional version of the hitchhike I hoped to take in 2020, we compare notes on the road. The route runs from Manhattan to the North Pole and the drivers include actors, painters, musicians, architects, chefs, dancers, and artists of all stripes. Each episode runs roughly twenty minutes and features original music. I booked guests, wrote scripts, recorded narration, recorded field audio, edited interviews and episodes, and collaborated on the music.

My co-hosts and I have tracked the spread of Chinese soft power by reporting around their biggest films, interviewing academics and the cast and crew of some of the biggest films Americans have never heard of. Over the course of our first season, we arranged and conducted interviews with academics, reporters, production designers, a stunt coordinator, a composer, a UFC fighter, a war correspondent, an actor making movies for the Chinese Propaganda Department, some of the folks behind Shrek, the creator of High School Musical, and one of the stars of The Wandering Earth, one of the highest grossing films of 2019. We learned to edit audio and I hitchhiked to Georgia to collaborate on the recording of our score. Our second season focused on Jackie Chan’s turn away from the American market after the last Rush Hour film, to make movies primarily aimed at the Chinese market, which reflects a shift in the global film industry. By talking with people who’ve worked with Chan and know him well, we’ve managed to tell the story of his shifting fortunes in Chinese politics and culture, weaving together an understanding of his ties to disgraced figures in the communist party and work on cultural propaganda around the Belt and Road initiative.

In Russian and English, I checked everything from a story about Chinese art heists to profiles of Mike Tyson and Dan Harmon, an investigation into political assassinations in Kiev to style pages, an oral history of solitary confinement to an overview of soundcloud rap’s ascendance, political deep dives about Bernie Sanders, Matt Gaetz and various Trumps to Keith Olbermann scripts. I contributed interviews to oral history projects. And I had the enormous privilege of working with some of my favorite writers.
