Andrew was a talented individual; he was very popular and his area of expertise was well respected by colleagues and the board of directors. He was happy to challenge the 'company line' and always provided thought-provoking ideas and concepts. And he was a nice guy: although he'll probably hate me saying that!

I was the course director (CD) for what is (truly) a ground-breaking course for high potential individuals who have work experience in the area of project/programme management - MSc Strategic Management of Projects (www.ucl.ac.uk/smp). From September 2011 this course will welcome project management students from around the world.I was also the UCL lead for the Project Directors Development Programme (PDDP) that was a course for and with Local Partnerships (formerly 4ps) and was custom created for those leading the procurement phase of complex (PFI/PPP) projects for local authoritities. This course won the Association for Project Management 2009 prize for the outstanding contribution to the development of project management. My research areas span a number of interests: These are:- The strategic management of modern and complex projects, particularly the early phases of the project - its 'front-end'- PPP type projects (particularly operational performance issues) and the separation of sound theory and pracice from all the 'guff'- Distinguishing project management from leadership- Meeting the infrastructure challenge (focus on contrasting the UK and New Zealand) Show less

    • Corporate Bid Manager
      • Nov 1999 - Aug 2004

I joined Sodexho Justice Services (SJS) (then UKDS) from UCL originally working directly for the Managing Director (Herb Nahapiet OBE) with a relatively wide portfolio of responsibilities, but these coalesced to become the Corporate Risk Manager. I then moved to head the bid team, working for the Business Development Director, but still retaining a number of wider roles, such as being the Contract Manager for one of the Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) and also providing in-house training in project management. I started out as a Research Assistant after I finished my PhD. I worked on two books on PFI. I then became the joint course director for an MSc in Construction Refurbishment Management and ended up as a lecturer on the MSc Construction Economics and Management, which I'd previously studies as a student. I've just been reminded (by Mike King - who found me on Linked-In) that I was involved in the OST/DTI Foresight exercise that looked at strategic longer-term issues - in my case within the construction industry and specifically on the repair and maintenance side. That led me to be one of the authors of the resultant Foresight reports and it was through that work that I met what turned out to be my future boss - Herb Nahapiet OBE. Show less

    • Design Coordinator and Manager
      • Oct 1989 - Aug 1992

I joined the Laing Management team building Chelsea & Westminster hospital in west London. I worked as a design coordinator and manager. My role was real the pre-site detailing of design information to allow a smooth and successful transition from plans to actions. I was given a number of 'challenging' packages to work on - the two main ones being the laboratory fit-out and suspended ceilings. This was a great time. I learned a huge amount - not so much on the technical side (although I picked up loads), but on the need for thinking ahead, building relationships, earning trust and using that as a powerful tool, and building a team. All lessons that have stayed with me. As a note - many of us from this project are still friends after a very long time. Show less
