I underwent a Year in Industry placement with Viridor at the Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre. My job description involved primarily assisting the Engineers in Maintenance team, as well as the Project and Commissioning teams. My Roles/Responsibilities and Key Achievements included: Access, Lifting and Maintenance issue reporting- where I would assess asset's installation and record any issues relating to access for removing/replacing the asset, if required, and performing maintenance tasks. Community Engagement- Community engagement with Open Industry events, where multiple pupils are shown what goes on in GRREC. I created a new task that involved a practical exercise in designing wind turbine blades to show the creation of power. This progressed through to a full work experience week, which involved planning a weeks worth of activities and learning, which coincided with being a STEM Ambassador Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) Tasks- I would extract the necessary information from Operation and Maintenance Manuals and create PPM tasks in the Computerised Maintenance Management System. Auto-Lube Installation- I was tasked with installing auto-lubes to the Overband Magnets and Eddy Current Separators. This involved tendering out to contractors to supply the equipment, and inviting them on site to show the scope of work. I submitted a business case demonstrating the savings involved with their installation. Once approved, I assisted in the installation. I entered this project as part of the Contribution to the Business Awards and became one of the six finalists for the Scottish Region of Year in Industry Students held by the Engineering Development Trust. Tri-party Walkdowns- I assisted the Projects team in Tri-party walkdowns, where I would walk the steam lines to ensure they were correctly installed. Serrated and Perforated Plate Procurement- I assisted the Commissioning team in the procurement of the plates for the Ballistic Separator. Show less
