Friends of Katahdin Woods and Waters was established in 2017 as a citizen conservation nonprofit working to preserve and protect the outstanding natural beauty, ecological vitality and distinctive cultural resources of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and surrounding communities for the inspiration and enjoyment of all generations. In partnership with the National Park Service, Friends provides a direct way for the public to participate in the continuing stewardship of Maine’s newest park by providing a measure of excellence that can reach beyond NPS management and funding. We raise funds in support of the monument, defend it against threats, mobilize volunteers for site projects, lobby legislatures and agencies, and represent users in the betterment of monument operations.

The Maine "Clean Elections" Initiative, Question 1 was passed by a 10-point margin on the November 3, 2015 ballot in Maine as citizen-initiated referendum. The initiative strengthened the Maine Clean Elections Act by addressing court Citizen-United-type court rulings to allow candidates to qualify for supplemental funds, required disclosures regarding gubernatorial inaugurations and transitions, increasing funding from $2 million to $3 million for the Maine Clean Elections Fund, and increasing penalties for violating campaign finance disclosure rules. The campaign was guided by a diverse coalition of social justice organizations and employed dozens of staff working robust communications and media, field, fundraising, and grass tops coalition building tactics to win at the ballot and fully implement the law within the statehouse.

Through a grassroots citizen-initiated referendum, the Educational Opportunity Tax Credit is a first-in-the-nation state policy that allows any Maine college graduates who has borrowed loans, lives and works in Maine, and pays taxes after graduation to receive a state income tax credit for loan payments. The effort to create the law was lead by students and community leaders, who developed the policy, devised state-wide grassroots strategies to advance the initiative, and supported the effort through C3/C4 education initiatives.
