Led team through design, implementation, optimization and deployment of Mapquest’s initial use of machine learning (Deeplearning4j) in a real-time, user-facing system. The system supports fast, flexible, cost effective and trainable search query parsing which, to date, has resulted in a 50% reduction in error rate relative to the previous system.Led implementation of Point of Interest type classifier using Apache Spark and Deeplearning4j. This POI type data drives iconography on Mapquest maps and is used to enrich search relevance calculations which has led to a 40% increase in map interactions.Led design and development of modern, geospatial core search engine using Scala, Play Framework, Apache Spark and Elasticsearch while maintaining API backwards compatibility. Concurrently, coordinated the multi-stage migration from the Legacy core search engine with web, iOS and Android teams which was achieved successfully with zero down time and zero negative user impact.Willing presenter to varying audiences (from executives to junior engineers) to effectively communicate what the team has done, how technologies have been utilized, and how best the learnings of the team can be leveraged by other teams. Highly motivated by opportunities to leverage work the team has done to positively impact other areas of the organization.Vocal member of Mapquest Architecture Council.Named inventor on 2 Utility Patent Applications filed with the USPTO with more applications in flight.

Major contributor to modernization of Mapquest’s predictive search engine using Scala, Spark, Play, and Elasticsearch. Focus included API and Elasticsearch query performance optimization, repeatable and reliable automated processes for search index data generation of baselines and updates and high availability and scaling on AWS infrastructure.Championed the use of Gatling + Jenkins to understand, track, and optimize the performance of Mapquest’s predictive search engine. Harvested test data from production logs, developed benchmark test, and implementing multiple optimizations driven by benchmark test results. Resulted in 75% reduction in latency relative to legacy predictive search engine. Enhanced the benchmark test to track number of results returned which has proven to be a valuable regression testing heuristic.Named inventor on 2 Utility Patent Applications filed with the USPTO
