Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of working alongside Andreea during many various events with the university, whether that was with student recruitment, Widening Participation or Welcome Week, she has always turned up with a smile and enthusiastic to make the most of her shift. It was clear from the start that her leadership and team working skills would help raise the standards of all the student ambassadors around her. Andreea has a great positive work attitude and is consistent in demonstrating her skills across all working activities. Andreea has a great working relationship with both supervisors and fellow students and her experience often helps push the junior advocates to better their personal skills. Andreea is one of the finest student workers I have had the opportunities to work with this past year, and I look forward to working many more events with her in the foreseeable future.

Andreea’s inspirational leadership in her role as Enactus Liverpool President in the 2022-23 academic year has allowed the team to continue its recent success story. In my role as Enactus University Adviser for the Enactus Liverpool team I have worked with Andreea for the last two years, firstly in her role as vice president and this year as president. Her excellent work ethic and organisational skills have allowed the team to function as a highly effective team, allowing them to secure a place in the Enactus UK National Expo semi-finals, where they lost out to the eventual winners Enactus Durham. Andreea has a fantastic ability to balance up many different activities whilst being president in her role as Mistress of Moots for the Bar Society and as a volunteer for the National Centre of Domestic Violence, Wirral Council and the Liverpool Law Clinic. This ability is incredibly impressive for an undergraduate student and will allow her to perform incredibly well on her Law degree and beyond as she pursues a career at the Bar. It’s been an immense pleasure to have had Andreea as the president this year and I can guarantee that she will go on to have a hugely successful career.

As part of my role as a volunteer for the NCDV I have been supporting clients in obtaining a Non-Molestation Order and as such have gotten accustomed with the Family Law Act 1996. The role involves getting in touch with clients and undertaking a telephone interview, whereby as a volunteer I aim to obtain information to be used in a statement written on behalf of the client. As part of the interview, I am in charge of ensuring that additional documents are completed such as the Statement Questionnaire and the Respondent Information Form aimed to ensure that the Respondent can be identified and served upon the order being granted by the court. Lastly, during the call, I must ensure that the clients have a good understanding of the court procedure, especially regarding the differences between 'on notice' or 'without notice' hearings, and the various stages at which the client will be expected to be present in court either in-person or remotely. In a similar manner to my work with the clinic, I must ensure that confidentiality is upheld at all stages of the process. The sensitive nature of the cases oftentimes requires that I take things slowly, repeat questions in order to uphold the chronological structure of the statement and that I check-in with the client to ensure that they are well enough to continue the call. As calls can last up to an hour, I must pay attention to vocal cues and pauses to determine when and if I need to repeat a question or provide the client with the opportunity to take a break. Due to abuse often occurring over a prolonged period of time, clients may not be able to remember the dates of certain incidents, making it often difficult to try and establish a comprehensive chronological order of events. It is my role to ensure that upon the end of the call, I take the time to draft the statement, and, if required, make a follow-up call to fill any gaps. Show less

I have had the opportunity to work with the university’s Student Success team, within the Careers & Employability team, as a Here to Help staff member for the university’s Welcome Week. Throughout the week, we engaged with many new and returning students and provided help with directions around campus, advice and whilst also launching a new scheme that aimed to support students facing social anxiety post-pandemic and offering them the opportunity to meet-up and walk in groups to lectures. This experience allowed me to work with a new team and work with some fellow Advocates and other student workers. I carried on this role into the Feel Good February program, a month full of various different activities open to both students and the public at no cost to the attendees. My role was to facilitate the day and ensure that we keep a record of all attendees, as well as provide guidance and information to all visitors. We had great feedback from our students undertaking surveys for the month. Overall, my role has been to support new and returning students as much as possible. Show less

After winning the bar society’s annual mooting competition in the second year of my law degree, my partner and I wanted to take a step further and run the competition as Mistresses of Moots. Following our successful candidacy for the role, we aimed to take the event one step further and raise the standard of the competition. In my role, I was responsible for organising and running the competition alongside the rest of the mooting committee. I judged competitors, providing them with feedback and guidance in order to aid their improvement and help develop their advocacy skills! Doing so required a great deal of time management as each individual round saw the participation of 24 teams and a total of 12 moots. In spite of the organisational hurdles (booking rooms, completing event cover forms, liaising with competitors and identifying a time that is mutually convenient for all parties) our competition saw great success and the highest level of engagement that the Bar Society has ever seen. One of our main aims (and our greatest success of the year) had been to organise and conduct the mooting final at the Liverpool Crown Court. The team and I successfully secured 3 courtrooms and 11 legal professionals including both barristers and judges to judge our finalists. The night culminated with a great networking event during which our team was able to celebrate its achievements! Show less

      • Oct 2020 - Apr 2022

Competed for two years in a row; the first time my partner and I were able to achieve a runner-up position for the first-year competitors and the second time we were able to secure a position in the final and go on to win the competition for the second and third-year competitors. Using persuasiveness to assert our research and the relevant law. Constructed court bundles and skeleton arguments, produced speeches and successfully achieved a ruling in favour of our case on a matter of vicarious liability and the torts of independent contractors.Overall, I was able to gain mooting experience on matters involving tort, contract, and criminal law. The variety of legal areas that I was able to explore during the competition has really helped me develop my legal research skills. Show less

      • Oct 2021 - Present

As part of the Law Clinic and my role as a student volunteer, I had the pleasure to take interpreter training. The training has provided me with great insight into the role and the best ways in which solicitors and interpreters can ensure that the client does not feel left out of the conversation. During my time with the clinic, I engaged in one task relating to my ability to speak Greek fluently. As part of a family reunion case, I had to look into and translate email communications between the client and their previous council, communication which happened to take place in Greek. As a result, whilst I did not have the opportunity to interpret a conversation between a client and council, I was able to put my training to use in order to translate the documents for the overseeing solicitor, which supported us in developing our understanding of the client's journey to the UK. The training has made me a better communicator and has helped me develop my interpersonal skills. As a result, I have been able to better engage with clients that often struggle with their English and require additional assistance during our interviews and client meetings. Show less

    • Law Clinic Assistant
      • Oct 2020 - Present

Whilst working as a volunteer for the Asylum and Immigration Project, I engaged with multiple clients and worked on various cases. Some of the areas that I engaged with involved statelessness, family reunion, and trafficking cases whilst also engaging with few waiver applications. As part of my role, I had to get accustomed with the SRA Standards and Regulations specifically the SRA Code of Conduct for Solicitors and Law Clinic's own Confidentiality Policy and Rules. Such, I was able to operate in a professional environment, similar to that of a law firm. As part of my work with the clinic, I often engaged in minute-taking, drafting statements and representatives for the Home Office with the help of solicitors. During family reunion cases, I was often tasked with completing online applications on behalf of clients. My role involved closely working with solicitors to ensure that all documents are completed in order to adhere to strict deadlines. Oftentimes, due to the particular nature of the cases, I have had to deal with sensitive matters and clients that have gone through various experiences. As such I have always ensured to create a positive environment in order for our clients to feel safe and comfortable. Similarly, as most of our cases involve foreign nationals, I have learnt to work with interpreters and overcome language barriers. Whilst my role does not often involve addressing the clients directly, I have had to learn how to navigate around interpreters to ensure that the clients feel listened to and included every step of the process.Additionally, whilst at the clinic, I have engaged in triage calls and worked collaboratively with various other volunteers. I have also been assigned research tasks and as such have gained a great understanding of the law in the area and the various instruments that apply. Due to the sensitive nature of cases, I have learnt to use AdvicePro and its various functions. Show less

      • Mar 2022 - Present

I was involved in organising events on behalf of the University of Liverpool Law Clinic alongside other forum members, where we aimed to promote and represent the clinic at said events. Some of the events we organised include the Law Clinic Open Days where I was tasked with organising and marketing the event as well as sharing my experiences with fellow students. The forum was also in charge of organising fundraisers such as the Access to Justice Legal Walk and Bake Sale. Furthermore, as part of the forum, I worked to gain feedback from students and ensured that the feedback that we received was used in collaboration with those who run the clinic to improve the experience for students. Surveys were carried out via google forms, and I was in charge of distributing the survey and collating the information for me to present at one of our forum meetings. As a result of my role, I acted as a point of contact between students and the clinic's management and ensured that students can approach me to share their worries in a safe space. Additionally, I helped one of the clinic solicitors to improve the current training module for new volunteers by sharing my experiences and outlining some of the professional benefits that I gained from volunteering with the clinic. I also undertook a review of the module and shared some feedback in order for the module to be developed further. Show less

    • Researcher
      • Jun 2022 - Jun 2022

As part of the Undergraduate Research Scheme for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, I undertook 3 weeks' worth of research in the application of the Loss of Control Defence in Criminal Law by looking at Crown Court cases across the country. As crown court cases are unreported, I had to engage with an array of news articles using the Current Awareness section on Westlaw primarily. My search resulted in over 2,000 news articles that I had to sift through in order to identify relevant cases. Once the articles had been identified, I had to construct an Excel spreadsheet and group each case based on its characteristics some of which included the type of violence the took place, the gender, age and relationship of the defendant/victim, and the general circumstances of the case. Once I finished engaging with the articles, I completed case proformas for some of the more interesting cases that I had come across. This involved giving the cases a closer look and engaging with factors including but not limited to the defendant's previous convictions, the venue of the offence, the method of killing and (if applicable) the weapon that was used to carry out the offence. The analysis followed with an identification of the prosecutions and defendants' version of events, any relevant appeals of the matter, whether any other defences were at play, as well as attempting to understand the verdict and the basis for allowing/not allowing a loss of control defence by both jury and judge. As such cases are often poorly reported, I had to cross-reference articles in order to find out the above information. Show less

As part of my employment with Causeway Education, I work with students ages 17-18 and I provide them with support during their UCAS Applications. My work with students starts during the summer all the way and up until the UCAS Deadline. My main role is to support students in writing their personal statements and providing guidance and feedback on their drafts. Oftentimes, students will ask for support in finding a topic of interest and the various ways they can display their enthusiasm towards their selected course(s). Whilst my main responsibility is to check-in and communicate with students, I often go beyond my main role and aim to engage in conversation with my mentees. As many of the students tend to have little understanding of what university entails, especially those I have engaged with in the last couple of years as a result of the pandemic, I try to answer any queries that they may have and hep them support during their decision-making process. Although I am a student at the University of Liverpool, I try to be as transparent as possible about the positives and negatives of my university and other universities alike. I engage in balancing sheets with students in order to support them in their decision-making, and I often provide them with advice on sitting the LNAT and undertaking interviews. As my work takes place remotely, I try to ensure that I engage with my students as much as possible, although this can sometimes prove difficult. Due to specific internal deadlines from the students' own school, the timeline we often follow can be reduced meaning that students may require a lot of support during a short period of time. As I often work with 8-10 students at one time, upkeeping great communication is vital in ensuring that I can provide feedback as fast as possible in order for deadlines to be met. https://causeway.education/our-mentors Show less

I work as a Liverpool Advocate, a role aiming to represent the University of Liverpool at various levels. My work with the Widening Participation & Outreach team aims to help bridge the gap between children attending Higher Education from different areas of income. In this role, I have been heavily involved in working with children as part of various projects such as Pathways to Law, Engineering, Banking and Finance, Liverpool Scholars and Realising Opportunities. My work has involved the delivery of campus tours, mentoring GCSE and A-Level students (and producing required revision materials), delivering talks and more. As a previous Pathways to Law student myself, I often support the programme and its students by delivering 1-2-1 talks and tours to those aiming to progress to a law degree, whilst also supporting them with interview advice and LNAT preparation. I have delivered talks to local school children on behalf of the Shaping Futures (the Merseyside Collaborative Outreach Project) on topics such as Higher Education, Exam and Revision tips and much more. Similarly, I have worked with IntoUniversity (a charity that aims to help disadvantaged young people gain a place within a higher education establishment) in delivering workshops, talks and support to students as young as primary age. I also work regularly with the UK Recruitment Team in a few different jobs, such as Open Days and Applicant Discovery Days, where I work alongside a team of ambassadors to conduct Campus or Coach Tours to prospective students and their families. I have worked as a Student Panelist on many events including some for the University of Liverpool Law School. My role during such events is to ensure that our guests are able to obtain a true image of what the university can offer to prospective students. As such I have been able to greatly develop my communication skills as such events attract thousands of visitors that I, as a Liverpool Advocate have to interact with. Show less

During my time with Exchange Chambers, I had the pleasure of shadowing Jonathan Rogers and Olivia Beasley both of whom have provided me with great insight into the criminal law system. During my first 2 days, I was with Jonathan and was able to observe a trial a criminal trial concerning the administration of a noxious substance or thing per section 24 of the Offences Against the Persons Act 1861. During the trial, I was privy to client conferences, discussions and negotiations between counsels, opening speeches and examination-in-chief and cross-examination of the alleged victim. During my third and last day, I was able to gain some invaluable experiences regarding the works of barristers working on behalf of the CPS, as Miss Beesley acted for the prosecution in a common assault dispute. As part of my experience, I was privy to discussions with solicitors, and members of the police. On this particular day, I observed the inner working of the judiciary as I sat on a hearing aimed at discerning whether or not an arrest warrant was to be issued following the absence of the defendant in the matter. Overall, this was an amazing experience that allowed me to observe both the works of a defence barrister and a prosecutor in an array of matters. Applied and was selected to represent the University of Liverpool at the annual Advocate of the Year Competition. As part of the competition, I had to carry out legal research and review documents for a mock trial. The documents in question comprised the facts of the case, and witness statements for the victims, defendant and the police officers involved in the matter. I had to undergo a legal conference with the client, during which I clarified some matters that I had identified and prepared prior to the competition. I was able to use the information provided in the client conference to carry out the examination-in-chief during the trial and to strengthen our case in favour of the claimant. This has helped me develop my adaptability, as I only had 30 minutes between my conference with the client and the examination-in-chief, during which I had to amend my questioning line in order to provide for the information that I was able to obtain during the conference. Overall, I achieved a runner-up position for the North-West region. During the feedback, I was told that I carried out a very coherent and well-structured examination-in-chief allowing the client to tell their own story, whilst maintaining a clear and easy-to-follow tone and demeanour. • Dec 2020 - Jun 2022

Recently, I have been involved with editing content for My Legal Power which strives to address issues of diversity within the legal sector. The website, which was led by a team of students, aimed to emphasise the voices of people that may not have otherwise had the opportunity to share their experiences. As a passionate activist for human rights and as part of this opportunity, I was able to dive deeper into my passion for equality and diversity within the legal sector. As an editor, I was able to develop my written and communication skills. Particularly, one of the articles that I was in charge of editing addressed issues concerning fundamental rights and the states' reluctance to fund economic, social and cultural rights and reliance on the principle of 'progressive realisation' contrary to their obligations in ICESCR. By partaking in this project alongside my studies and my part-time job, I have learnt to develop my organisational skills, whilst also taking initiative to engage with the website and the other students working on the project. One of the highlights of my time with the project was interviewing and writing an article to share the story of a trainee solicitor with the Ministry of Justice. I was glad to have had the opportunity to organise the interview, prepare questions and write an article in order to develop my skills further. Being able to share a non-conventional story in the legal sector, was of great importance to me due to my work with low-income students that often shy away from choosing law as a career path due to misconceptions around the associated costs. This included having to review an NDA in order to identify existing mistakes and suggest changes. The document had over 150 mistakes, all of which I was able to identify after close scrutiny. Further, I had to advise a client on an acquisition transaction. This exercise allowed me to research in-depth about merger and acquisition deals and all relevant legislation, due diligence considerations and dispute resolution methods. Overall, it was a fantastic experience that has really helped me develop my understanding and passion for commercial law. Show less

3-day mini-pupillage with the Liverpool Crown Prosecution Services. As part of the work experience, I was able to familiarise myself with court etiquette and various court procedures including swearing in juries, giving judgements and sentencing hearings. Similarly, I was able to develop my understanding of client conferences and what they entail and gain a better grasp of the client/barrister relationship. During the three days, I was able to sit in on a criminal proceeding concerning actual bodily harm under section 47 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. This allowed me to witness submissions being made to the court and jury, as well as the examination-in-chief and cross-examination of the two victims in question. Upon the verdict of the jury, I had the opportunity to witness the judge passing on the sentence. On the last day of the mini-pupillage, we engaged with fictitious scenarios relating to matters of criminal law and used relevant legislation to identify factors necessary for a conviction to take place. Shadowing prosecution barristers has aided my insight into the legal sector. Show less

I undertook a week's work experience placement at Just One where I undertook the role of an Office Assistant. As part of my role, I performed administrative and routine clerical tasks. Responsibilities included organising, copying and managing files, acting as a receptionist for the office, answering calls, scheduling appointments and meetings, recording minutes, and supporting other staff with organisational tasks. I was also offered the opportunity to meet with future beneficiaries of the services provided by Just One, which helped me develop my communication skills. During the meetings with the potential clients, I was tasked with taking notes regarding their needs. Show less
