As a fellow, I participated in a six-month to a year training program that provides a deep and wide education in strategic storytelling and change-focused communications. As a fellow, I must submit up to two stories to PRISM that are focused on telling the experience of rural lifes, especially of those who are immigrants. In my LFA Hometown Fellow role, I worked with the Southwest Initiative Foundation, specifically with their Community Impact team. In this capacity, I engaged in a variety of regional and community-led initiatives. Some examples of work I did with SWIF includes, census outreach, storytelling (shifting a rural narrative of SW MN), grantmaking, DEI work, and oral storytelling research of the makeup of our sw region. Through the Lead for America Hometown Fellowship, I became a part-time legal assistant with the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota in their Worthington (Southwest Minnesota office). In this role, I supported the main attorney with assistance on client cases which included DACA, DACA renewals, Natz interviews, and communications. While in this role, I joined the ILCM policy committee and spoke in support of the MN Drivers Licences bill at the State Capitol (virtually). I welcomed in staff, faculty, and students into the cozy space that allowed for events, small meetings, and informal gatherings. Not only do I make the final edits, but I am responsible for the executive team and with the writers. I also make sure we are presenting ourselves well in the social media and on campus.
