My position as a Youth in Residence gave me the privilege of supporting children, youth and their families experiencing mental health challenges. As a peer support worker I was able to provide emotional support from the lens of lived experience, help with systems navigation, and connection to resources and services. Among other things, this could look like sitting down with a youth to discuss their present mental health concerns and connecting with family members to help them better understand the perspective of their youth. My project work consisted of helping plan, organise and execute events including the Balancing our Minds Youth Summit (a one-day event for highschool age students promoting mental health awareness, the last one having taken place at Roger’s Arena with ~1500 youth in attendance), the Summer Institute and the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use Collaborative Learning Session. I also had the pleasure of running the Kelty Youth Ambassador Program, a program for youth 17-25 who are interested in improving the way mental health is viewed, treated and managed within their schools and communities. I had the pleasure and privilege of working with these youth to support them in getting started on their journey of mental health advocacy. My position put me in charge of running the mindcheck.ca social media channels which were dedicated to promoting the mindcheck.ca website and encouraging early recognition of symptoms and stigma-reduction of and connection to resources for mental health challenges. I was frequently permitted the chance to have my voice heard and to give feedback around youth-related resources, apps and websites and have participated in the development and revision of the Breathr app, the Mindshift app and various youth-targeted initiatives and programs such as ONTRAC, WellAhead and the organization, promotion and execution of the Champions of Wellness Awards .
