Overall newspaper profit during my first term as GM was over $1.3 million. The newspaper ranked twenty-fourth in the company with a 65.5% year-over-year reduction in revenue credits due to advertising errors. With a high emphasis on assuring the newspaper reflected the diversity of our community we achieved our goals with 9.3% of our management positions minorities and 49.3% females. As part of our operational plan we were charged with overhauling the operations of our free weekly newspaper (this was in addition to our daily newspaper). Our solution was to simply overrun our daily newspaper and delivered it to non-subscribers. The business plan was showcased on Gannett’s best practice website and incremental revenue was 25% higher than plan projections. My involvement with non-profit organizations increased and for the first time the newspaper was selected as the United Way “pacesetter company” for mid-size companies in the Johnson County area.
