    • UMAP Project Manager
      • Jan 2003 - Jan 2012

Manager of the UMAP collaboration, now known as Collaborative Content, managed by the MSC-AA. This five partner, grant funded collaboration began in 2003, and became self-funded in 2006. In 2009/10 the collaboration gradually became a national collaboration, incorporating all 31 UK medical schools. As part of this role I have been involved in the design and development of a programme of MCQ and EMQ writing and quality assurance processes and associated technology, working alongisde partner schools opting in across the UK.A funded search and appraisal of available comercial and academic project based solutions was funded by JISC 2005-07 and extended in 2009. The work led to a conclusion that institutional collaborations, including our own, required a bespoke solution, or high compromise. This led to in house development of a hugely successful bespoke system by a team of two developers. Its specifications, which have been met in full, were to provide a highly scalable, secure and web based tool, managed centrally, and its content accessible to school staff under a range of permission based rules. It supports event based, and home-based item writing, as well as offering huge flexibility in user defined stages of dispersed and centralised quality assurance. Writing and quality assurance are process based, supporting the user(s) to undertake current best practice steps and checks. Quality assurance amendments are stored as versions which can be compared. Our use of the system requires a certain number of quality assurance stages to be completed prior to live selection and release. Schools downloading items are asked to upload anonymised statistics as per classical test theory for evaluation and to benefit all schools in their future selection decisions. Being QTI compliant it allows interoperability with many delivery systems now starting to feature in medical assessment in the UK. Items are tagged to support selection/reporting including to TD09.
