Apart from her active lab involvement in the Runstadler Lab, I had the privilege of working with Andrea in developing a rapid subtyping and viral rescue protocol for use in our research group. During this time, Andrea proved to be meticulous in recording progress in our shared electronic lab notebook in Evernote, and contributed ideas to enhance the efficiency and cost effectiveness of our implementation. Apart from honing her skills in doing PCR (and its variants), she mastered the Python codebase for mining primers from known influenza sequence databases, and wrote a custom script for compiling the as-then scattered records of in-house samples into a single file. As a wrap-up for her work, Andrea presented a poster at the MIT Campus Preview Weekend, and delivered two lab meetings that were well-received by our colleagues and our advisor, Prof. Jonathan Runstadler. We are continuing on the great foundation that Andrea has built, and are looking forward to publishing this work in the future.

      1. Developed 2 training modules, "Isolation and Quarantine calculations" and "Trauma Informed Response", for new Case Investigators with the San Francisco Department of Public Health. 2. Trained over 200 students, clinicians, Department of Public Health employees, and non-healthcare-based staff. Facilitated discussion, presented material, and provided evaluations and feedback on performance. Keep training materials up-to-date with current US, CA, and SF COVID-19 recommendations.3. Coordinated a 2-armed study that sought to understand: 1) transmission events in San Francisco via case-control methodology and 2) reasons for accepting or declining the COVID-19 vaccine via qualitative interviews. Onboarded and trained 10 research assistants, created schedules, and liaised between research staff and leadership on a team of 20. Show less

Lab Manager Managed ordering for all projects and kept the lab and office areas organized and safe. This was done concurrently with my research responsibilities. • Used the 6S Lean method to improve and standardize lab processes. • Ensured lab was functioning efficiently by maintaining laboratory supplies, calibrating equipment, and meeting building safety requirements. • Overhauled ordering system to be more streamlined. The new system saved money and time for researchers and ensured research projects proceeded smoothly Research Associate Instrumental in assay development and quality control for a small, start-up pharmaceutical company. Contributed to the data package of the company's first molecule for FDA clinical trials. Developed and optimized quality control assays used to assess novel proteins for stability, activity, and lot-to-lot variability • Generated and presented data for pre-IND clinical package, novel indications, grants, and scientific advisory board presentations Show less

Nurtured and expanded my interests in research, One Health, and global health. Was the first undergraduate researcher in the lab and participated in bench work, fieldwork, and administrative activities. • Validated new method for virus isolation • Screened hundreds of samples for presence of influenza through RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, and real-time PCR • Captured, sampled, and tagged approximately 100 gulls a week from October to April to help monitor the transmission of avian influenza • Mentored other undergraduate students in lab etiquette and technique, sample processing, and bird handling Show less

Spent two months in rural Japan working with collaborators on mapping avian influenza transmission patterns. Navigated language barriers and cultural differences to meet expectations in lab work and collaborator relationship building. • Traveled with the research team in Hokkaido to collect fecal samples from wild gull populations • Characterized multiple virus positive samples by subtyping and Sanger sequencing • Presented on research to graduate students, PhD researchers, and PIs • Taught approximately 100 Japanese high school students about American culture during their "culture week" Show less
