Contract research position (6-12 months) within the Applied Nanotechnology Lab at UNB. The goal of this project is to help develop next generation pressure sensing materials for a growing tech firm. This role has me much more involved at the project level with formulating piezoresistive materials and systems including design of experiment and scale-up planning. Since starting with OCNI, this position will be more consultative as UNB-ANL recruits graduate students to takeover. In this role, I helped clients of all types and sizes, from individuals to large multinationals, navigate their technical questions and problems. While I did support the rest of the client services team in analytical service quotes for more routine analyses, my main function was to handle the non-routine requests by working across our technical services groups to match customer requirements with internal capabilities or to offer suggestions when external resources could be better suited. I conducted market research and competitive intelligence, wrote proposals and reports, drafted contracts, and actively participated in research projects when my skillsets were needed, especially with RPC’s engineering groups. As part of this role, I also oversaw the delivery of RPC's NRC IRAP Contributions-to-Organizations program, where I helped coordinate between business clients and our internal project managers to deliver a number of small projects throughout the fiscal year. When I started, we were handling around 14 projects per fiscal year. This last fiscal year, the various teams within RPC conducted 24 short, small-scale projects for businesses throughout Canada. These were mainly with the Engineering Services and Minerals and Industrial Services groups at RPC, but also with the Bioscience and Analytical R&D teams. For a good part of my tenure at RPC, I also helped manage, promote, and deliver, the RPC-ACOA Advanced Manufacturing Initiative. During this project, I visited several manufacturing facilities throughout the Atlantic provinces in order to share ideas and concepts around "Industry 4.0", to promote process improvement and technology adoption as a means to improve productivity through digitization. During this time, I had the privilege of seeing some really interesting processes and products being made in our region, how they are being produced, and some of the challenges that exist in terms of labor, training, access to capital, and supply chain disruption. My role as Research Development Officer at NBIF had me interacting with governmental departments, federal and provincial funding agencies, as well as with NB-based research organizations and researchers to promote and develop applied research and its commercialization. To achieve this, I helped manage and deliver NBIF's various research funding programs that support R&D personnel and infrastructure. This meant reviewing grant application, writing board briefs, organizing review committees, and ensuring document traceability for control purposes. Another part of the role was to support the NBIF Venture Capital team with technology review in start-ups and to suggest research partners to small businesses looking to use the Innovation Vouchers to further internal applied R&D needs. Contendo created generic and site-specific training material for the Oil and Gas industry. As a Technical Writer, I did site-specific projects for companies such as Coneco Philips, Pengrowth, Hibernia, etc. TWs would review site-specific P&IDs, control narratives, process narratives, vendor documents and any other relevant material to create online teaching material in collaboration with client engineers to ensure that the information was accurate and succinct. TWs would then work with Contendo Illustrators, Animators, Programmers, and Sound Technicians to create a quality product that would bring the various industrial processes to visual life. TWs were also responsible for creating quiz and test questions to ensure trainees were learning the material. Show less

This role was within the lab of Dr Kecheng Li. The lab was focused on lignocellulosic transformation, looking to improve processes in mechanical pulping to increase productivity, throughput, and product diversification. This also allowed me to transfer from a full-time Master of Engineering student to a part-time Doctoral student. Some of the highlights of the role include the following:• Responsible for purchasing reagents, disposables, and safety in the wet lab.• Project manager for the delivery and installation of a pilot refiner from KRK• Wrote operating procedures for various apparatus and experiments• Maintained contact with industrial partners including plant managers and senior technical staff at various sites. I led the delivery of a mill-scale enzyme application trial for an 8-hour shift• Involved in summer student hiring, supervision and evaluation• Point person for ensuring labs in our section were being outfitted to comply with UNB's new Wellfield Protection Plan. I took what was supposed to be a 6-month contract at the Belledune Smelter to cover a mat leave. At the time, it was owned and operated by Xstrata. The facility is now being decommissioned by Glencore. I left this position after 3 months to return to NB Power when called-back. During my 3-month term at the smelter, I worked in the process control lab, where lab personnel were responsible to receive and prep samples which included the following: • Milling and grinding of ores and cast alloys (lead and silver) for process control and quality control. • Wastewater effluent monitoring. • Acid analysis of sulphuric acid produced by flue gas desulphurization. • Keeping accurate logs of results and calibration records. • Routine operation of XRF Show less

The Dalhousie Generating Station was a 330MW oil fired generating station (decommissioned in 2011). I worked at the facility as a summer student starting partway through my undergrad and into the start of my masters degree (in the summers 2003-2006). During the summer of 2006, I was offered a position to fill-in for a sick leave. When the person returned in the fall of 2007, I was laid off in November. The role included responsibilities for monitoring several processes and systems inside and outside of plant boundaries including the following: • Boiler chemistry monitoring and control • Flue gas desulphurization chemistry monitoring and gypsum analysis • Water and wasterwater treatment process monitoring and control • Environmental sampling of ash disposal site, plant effluents, and remote air PM/SO2 monitoring stations. • Environmental sample prep, analysis and drafting (including air and water discharges) reports to the provincial Department of Environment • Equipment upkeep and calibration of instrumentation. Generating work orders and working with mechanics and technicians to troubleshoot problems. Familiar with lockout-tagout procedures. • Participated in an Ultra-Filtration pilot project and the commissioning of an industrial scale Reverse Osmosis unit (2x200 gpm units) • Routine operation of IC, ICP-OES, conductivity and pH meters, and their calibration Show less
