Software Systems Tester / Junior Developer

Pietermaritzburg Area, South Africa This title involves working in a software R&D department as a software tester, help manual author, research assistant and junior developer for some projects. We have a generally open-minded approach regarding how engineers contribute changes to our software projects; so I help out with a lot of the web based UIs, basic debugging of Java code, writing build scripts, as well as maintaining issue tracking and code storage systems for the team. We have a generally open-minded approach regarding how engineers contribute changes to our software projects; so I help out with a lot of the web based UIs, basic debugging of Java code, writing build scripts, as well as maintaining issue tracking and code storage systems for the team. Our systems are mostly designed and developed in-house, covering both hardware and software elements for the purpose of occupancy and traffic flow analytics through controlled areas such as multi-story parking garages and shopping malls. This allows us to provide not only meaningful statistics for business owners to enhance their targeted marketing campaigns, but also to provide more efficient route suggestions for customers to find the closest available parking space, thus reducing frustration levels and improving general mood. In a nutshell, I work with a group of like-minded individuals and I get paid to play with technology and document software we design and create. (:

As a help manual author, my responsibilities included publishing technical and user-level documentation for numerous standalone programs within a comprehensive POS software suite to multiple platforms, as well as weekly training videos on new and updated system features. As a software systems tester, my responsibilities included comprehensive test runs of our software packages, starting from new installations in a fresh Windows environment, covering numerous variations of all application features and ending with complete system removal; all the while ensuring all the processes were non-destructive to customer data. This position required an in-depth understanding of the application features, along with the ability to think outside the box in terms of the various possible system configurations for different store environments. Software release cycles were high pressure runs with multiple different departments having to synchronise their work schedules in order to meet deadlines. Show less

Howick, KwaZulu Natal A small computer support and sales business venture myself and a friend tried to start up. The goal was to provide general computer related sales and support to the members of our local community. We discovered that there simply wasn't enough of a market for our services, leaving us with far too much free time and nobody to actually do work for. We discovered that there simply wasn't enough of a market for our services, leaving us with far too much free time and nobody to actually do work for. After building a few customcomuter systems and assisting a small handful of customers with general system maintenance, it turned out nothing more than a very educational market research project that unfortunately couldn't sustain itself.
