I was responsible for the implementation of a project from the Swiss Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI) and Bundesamt für Energie (BFE), in collaboration with the start-up company Optical Additives GmbH (http://www.optical-additives.com/). The aim of this research and development project is the realization of highly fluorescent dye-zeolite L host-guest materials to be used in luminescent solar concentrators (LSC). Such LSCs allow for an increase in the efficiency of solar cells and extend their use to diffuse lighting situations. The current goal is to create small "self-charging" electronic devices such as smart phones, tablets, wireless computer mice, and so. The project will be later extended to larger scale energy production by integrating the LSC modules into building facades. I fulfill the following functions in this project: - Leading a small research team (3 persons) - Preparation of and implementing research plans, delegating experimental work, and supervision of the projects scientific progress including financial aspects - Preparation of grant applications and associated communication to the relevant stake holders (industrial partners, academic administration, and external committees) - Writing of scientific publications and preparation of patents

In this function, I was responsible for the planning and organization of research projects aimed at the use of supramolecularly organized luminescent nano materials for imaging methods. An important aspect of my work was the study of photophysical properties and molecular interactions in dye-loaded host-guest materials (mostly zeolite L and MOFs). I was also supervising the microscopy (epifluorescence, confocal) and spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR, and luminescence) labs. Other functions I fulfilled: - Writing of grant applications including project and budget planning - Evaluation and acquisition of laboratory equipment and measurement instruments - Representative functions for Prof. De Cola at executive meetings - Planning and implementing research project, including the training of master and PhD students - Writing of scientific publications and textbooks

The aim of my research here was the improvement of composite polymers for optical applications such as ophthalmic lenses with high refractive index. I also organized supervised the move of laboratory equipment and a confocal microscope from the University of Bern to the University of Zürich. Furthermore I was coaching PhD students and performed QA tests of pilot lots of zeolite L (Clariant GmbH). My project involved fundamental research into using zeolite L based host-guest composites for optical applications, such as lenses. In collaboration with Optical Additives GmbH, we developed a prototype zeolite L/polymer blend that remained transparent in the visible range. I also fully involved in the patenting of this material. I was also training PhD students and fulfilled network administration and IT helpdesk duties on the department level. Temporary work contract. I was carrying out a feasibility study regarding the incorporation of inorganic nano-crystals such as zeolite L into organic polymers while conserving their transparency in the visible range. Amongst my responsibilities were planning and carrying out experiments and reporting to the senior management. Temporary work contract.
