At Canopy Forum, I edit article submissions, format these articles for publication using WordPress, and advertise our author's work on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. I also write scripts, produce, and edit for Canopy Forum's podcast, Interactions. When editing, I engage writers about their work. I don't just correct grammar. I make sure that I understand what our authors are trying to say so that I can help them say it in the most meaningful way possible. At Canopy, we make academic writing accessible to a general audience. This means I have to find points of entrance to academic writing about concepts I probably have never have encountered before. I quickly assess arguments and locate weak points, murky areas, and strengths. I also determine how to edit the article so that it communicates clearly to our audience--and truly says what the author meant to say. Academic writing is notoriously dense and difficult, and many readers avoid it. But it doesn't have to be this way. The challenge of making academic writing not only accessible but also engaging ("un-putdownable") is very fulfilling work. Podcast production has become another passion of mine. I choose articles from Canopy and adapt them into scripts for audio. Reading an article aloud as-is doesn't always make for the most engaging audio, so I take Canopy articles, break them down into sections, and tweak the style of the piece from formal essay to a conversational script. I write introductions, conclusions, and ad breaks, produce the audio on Audacity, and apply music and other effects to craft an engaging podcast episode. Show less

Summer Intern
-
Jun 2015 - Jun 2017
For multiple summers during high school, I was an intern with West Virginia Writers. I helped organize the event, assisted behind the scenes, and made sure everything ran smoothly. My work with the organization gave me the opportunity to network with authors and publishers at a very young age, solidifying in my mind that I was meant to be a writer for the rest of my life.
