I am a part-time volunteer RJ for the program “Cultural Dimsum” aired on RTHK, the main public broadcaster in Hong Kong. Cultural Dimsum is part of a cultural expansion program, so my job is to bring issues and stories pertaining to South Asians in HK to the general public. This position has exposed me to the politics of ethical interviewing, representation and storytelling. I was working with The Politics of Sexual Violence, an institute at City College, as a researcher for a project at the Center for Human Rights Documentation and Research (Columbia University Libraries). This project aims to archive episodes of mass violence in South Asia through “e-memorialization.” As a researcher, I interacted with major human rights violations and the politics of representation and memorialization. The Gallatin Global Fellowship in Urban Practice (GGFUP) provides funding of up to $5,000 and support for advanced undergraduate and Master’s students to pursue extended, community-engaged research projects in partnership with urban social justice organizations in New York, Chicago, Oakland, Buenos Aires, Berlin, and Madrid. Based on a vision of sharing resources, producing practical scholarly research, and self-reflexively critiquing systems of power and privilege, this fellowship is built upon established long-term partnerships with community-based organizations. Each research project is co-designed by the host organization with faculty mentors and Urban Practice fellows. As an Urban Practice Fellow, I interned at and was later hired by the Right To The City Alliance. Show less

The Americas Scholars Program brings together high-achieving juniors and seniors at Gallatin who are interested in matters related to the Americas—understood quite broadly to include the US, other parts of North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Americas Scholars participate in academic seminars, cultural activities, and international or domestic trips with Gallatin faculty members. As part of the Americas Scholars’ program at NYU Gallatin, I studied about housing and displacement in the Americas (with a focus on Latin America). As part of my research, I travelled to Bogota, Colombia and then Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I met and learnt from politicians, urban planners and theorists, and grassroots groups like the MST. • Jan 2016 - Aug 2016

This year-long program provides students with up to $5,000 each to support research and work in the field of human rights. In the spring semester, participants study the concept, history and political manifestations of human rights in both a seminar and independent studies. In the summer, we engage in extended research or internships at organizations around the world. In the fall, present our findings at a symposium open to the entire university community. As part of this fellowship, I interned at Instituto Pólis in São Paulo, Brazil. As an intern in the global engagement department, I created a policy document with examples and analyses of “right to the city” implementation around the world, which was used as a lobbying tool in the UN Habitat III conference in Ecuador (2016). In my research, I engaged particularly with ideas of participatory democracy and women’s and minority rights. I gained extensive research skills and learnt political and diplomatic document writing.
