After completing my internship, I had the opportunity to extend my role as a research assistant in a psychophysiological study designed to clarify the perceptions of exercise in Latin Americans with overweight and obesity. In this role, I actively contributed to various aspects of the research process, including recruiting participants, coordinating schedules, and conducting data collection. My primary responsibility was to ensure strict adherence to the research protocol and meet the requirements set forth by the Institutional Review Board (IRB).I gained practical experience utilizing a portable EEG system to measure the brain's electrical activity and examine the networks that activate or deactivate in response to each stimulus while recording affective responses throughout the experimental protocol. Moreover, I provided additional support to my team by employing MATLAB processing methods to analyze the preliminary data, contributing to the development of more suitable interventions for addressing overweight and obesity in this population. Over the past four years, I have had the privilege of serving as a research assistant for Florida International University’s Kinesiology program. Our interdisciplinary team’s primary focus has been to introduce members to the central methods of research evaluation in kinesiology through the development of independent critical thinking skills as well as oral and written communication skills.Throughout my multi-year research experience, I engaged in a range of leadership and support roles in various studies centered on examining the influence of attentional interventions on the cognitive and emotional determinants of exercise adherence and sport performance. My responsibilities included screening participants for study eligibility, proactive recruitment, scheduling, data collection, and consistent communication of any protocol deviations to the Principal Investigator (as required). Following a semester of a research course, a final project of mine then evolved into a subsequent independent research study on the effects of a cognitive load on pain perception during stretching. The writing process equipped me with experience across various stages of the scientific process. This encompasses conducting comprehensive literature reviews, designing robust methodologies, statistical analysis, and developing a manuscript for peer and instructor review. Implications for improving affective response to stretching and range of motion through the application of various cognitive loads were presented at the 2023 Florida Undergraduate Research Conference (regional) and Association of Applied Sport Psychology (national) conference.- Proficient in utilizing specialized tools such as the Biodex isokinetic dynamometer and the twin-axis goniometer.- Effectively navigated the ethical review process and ensured compliance with regulations and guidelines by successfully submitting research protocols to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and obtaining necessary approvals.
