I worked in a case-control study in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other state health departments nationwide. The purpose of the study is to find out how well a new vaccine (PCV 13) works for preventing infections with a germ call Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) in young children ages 2-59 months old. This germ is the common cause of ear infections, blood infections, pneumonia, and meningitis. This germ is the common cause of ear infections, blood infections, pneumonia, and meningitis. The vaccine is design to prevent these infections. To figure out how well the vaccine is working I was comparing information about children who have been sick with pneumococcus to information about children who have not been sick. I participated in the planning, design, and implementation of health related surveillance systems of epidemiologic studies, including outbreak investigations and analysis of epidemiology surveys. Assisted with grant applications by conducting literature reviews as well as in the preparation of a grant application to support enhanced surveillance and target epidemiologic research on a health-related issue specific to invasive pneumococcal disease. Participated in the design and preparation of study, surveillance, and field investigation protocols. Prepared survey instruments and surveillance forms. Conducted data analysis, interpret epidemiologic findings, prepare technical documents, respond to public inquiries on epidemiologic issues, and perform a variety of other epidemiology related work.
