This is an elected role and the election process in itself meant I had to promote myself and answer questions confidently. The role has also offered me many opportunities and helped me face new challenges and develop many skills such as:- Debating my ideas with others- Planning and producing campaigns and projects- Leading groups of like-minded individuals e.g. I am lead for the Homelessness Campaign- Communications and marketing, this would include writing blog posts, creating content for social media- Leading and attending meetings, regular monthly meeting as well as additional meetings with external groups or within campaignsI have also been awarded a Bronze Youth award for my work in the Youth Cabinet and am currently working towards my Gold Youth award. My debate partner and I recently broke past the regional round of the Oxford Schools' Debating Competition and so had the honour of competing at the international finals at Oxford University. As novices, this was an incredible learning opportunity and a chance to apply our skills competitively. I thoroughly enjoyed the motions that we debated and was able to apply some psychological principles to them such as in the 3rd round: This House believes that parents should not inflate their children's expectations of what they're capable of achieving. We were Closing Government and in my extension speech, I contextualised the ideas in the opening half surrounding mental health of the children by looking at the ideas of humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers. This was an incredible two-day masterclass in medicine that involved a series of role-plays, seminars, simulations and Q&A sessions that I am so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to attend. Although I will personally not be pursuing medicine, I know that I will apply the skills I have learnt and honed in a wide range of settings. In particular, I thoroughly enjoyed the psychiatrist session as someone who is looking into a career in health psychology and the discussions of medical ethics. I am so grateful for this incredible opportunity; this debate was a brilliant introduction to the British Parliamentary format and an academically challenging competition. I thouroughly enjoyed debating such thought-provoking topics including minority representation in the media; the leniency of our justice system and public health. My partner and I were able to get into the open finals as one of the top four teams- the only novice pair to do so (we would have been first in the novice final). Additionally, I also achieved an individual speaker prize in the novice category. Show less
