During my PhD I've been interested in characterizing the human gut microbiomes of diverse groups of individuals living in the Brazilian Amazon. My project is focused on understanding the role that urbanization and subsistence lifestyles have on the composition and metabolic potential of gut microbial communities. The goal is understand how recent population dynamics and environmental factors have been shaping the gut microbiome in both Native American and urban populations of the Amazon. With a Fulbright Scholarship, I was part of the Alm Lab @ MIT and worked on Brazilian Gut Microbiome Metagenomics data. I also participated in ongoing projects that involve anaerobically culturing gut microbes of healthy global populations. From 2012 to 2017, under the supervision of Dr. Ândrea Ribeiro-dos-Santos, I developed projects towards characterizing uniparental ancestry lineages in ancient and contemporary human populations. I investigated both mitochondrial and Y-chromosome DNA in Brazil's current northeastern population as well as human skeletal remains from the colonial period.
