Ana de Castro, in her position as Careers Leader, and I as the Head of Science, worked closely together to monitor student progression into STEM pathways with a particular focus on successful applications to Medicine university courses. Her vast experience as Higher Education & Careers Lead enabled us to increase successful applications to a number of prestigious Medicine courses over the three years we worked together. We established the Southbank Biomedical Society and provided thorough, hands-on support to students throughout their applications for Medicine courses, including multiple mock interviews and timed practise BMAT/UCAT assessments. Ana is a diligent and passionate colleague who has student outcomes at the centre of her passion for education.

Ana has been a teacher on OSC’s spring and summer courses between 2011 and 2018. She is one of those fantastic teachers who model the IB learner profile in her career. A very knowledgeable linguist, she has taught intensive exam revision courses in English A Lang & Lit and English B, as well as Spanish B and Spanish ab initio in Oxford in the spring. On our summer courses in the UK (Oxford and Cambridge) and in the US (Boston), she has taught English A Lang & Lit and English B, as well as Presentation Skills, Time Management and a College Application class. She has advised students on Extended Essays and offered personal college counselling consultations. She has been thoroughly involved in the students’ whole experience on our courses! Ana has shared her knowledge and experience with her OSC colleagues too, by acting as a mentor for teachers who are new to OSC and by holding the position of OSC Subject Advisor in Language A and B. Thank you so much for what you have done for OSC, Ana!

I strongly believe in collaborative learning, intrinsic motivation, project-based inquiry and the IB (International Baccalaureate) educational framework. Tribes Learning Communities, ATLs, Restorative Practices, Social-emotional learning framework, as well as Harvard Project Zero Visible Thinking routines inspire me. I try to incorporate these programmes and philosophies into my planning for teaching and learning as much as possible. My biggest area of interest within this subject is science fiction and fantasy literature, particularly speculative, dystopian stories.
