My research is industry based with The Victorian Institute of Sport rowing program with the goal of having a practical positive impact on rowing coaching, training and performance monitoring practices. My four studies aims are: 1. Validate Peach PowerLine and NK EmPower rowing power meters for catch, finish and arc angles against a Vicon motion analysis system 2. Validate Peach PowerLine and NK EmPower power meters, and Concept 2 Model D ergometer for power output per stroke 3. Establish the effect of various measures of rowing technique on boat velocity when controlling for rower power output 4. Determine the effect of various measures of rowing technique and physiological capacity on 2000 m rowing performance

Provision of physiological testing to inform athlete training practices and enhance performance. Including lactate threshold analyses, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) assessments, and metabolic efficiency testing. Modes of testing ranged across cycling, kayak, rowing, and running disciplines. This role built on my previous role as Performance Physiology Intern, with the additional responsibilities of:• Investigating the best-practice use of Norma-Tec compression boots, cold-water immersion following strength and high-intensity interval training, and menthol mouth rinse as a pre-cooling aid, and feeding this information back to the department for wider implementation.• Leading physiological testing • Providing feedback to athletes and coaches on physiological and performance testing outcomes • Developing rowing-specific training programs for NZ under 23 athletes• Experience working with and creating large workbooks in Microsoft Excel for physiological data management, analysis and reporting.

    • Performance Physiology Intern
      • Mar 2015 - Jul 2016

In this position I supported the lead HPSNZ physiologists in providing physiological support to elite and development athletes and coaches across a ranges of national sporting organisations, including Rowing NZ, Canoe Racing NZ, Yachting NZ, Athletics NZ, and Triathlon NZ. This included my involvement in: • Physiological testing and data analysis, • Administration and monitoring of heat acclimation strategies• Informing best-practice recovery strategies• Quantification of weekly training load data• Informing travel practices and light exposure timelines for time-zone adjustment• Leading the trial of the Fatigue Science Readiband for athlete sleep quality assessment

    • Performance Physiologist

A voluntary role providing rowing specific physiological support to the Auckland RPC coaches, including mentoring under-graduate students in their development of practical physiological skills. Working with the head coach I identified key training load variables for the assessments of intrinsic training load and implemented weekly feedback to inform training programming.
