Oritain offers an amazing forensic origin tracing capability that is a game changer, especially for supply chains that are inherently opaque. “Know your goods” can be achieved with the right amount of effort and technology. In a time when it is so important to exercise due dilligence, being able to get deeper insights into the origin of the inputs into your goods is extremely valuable for risk mitigation and compliance. After more that 30 years working as a regulator and standards setter for the cross-border movement of goods and people, I am excited to be able to share my knowledge and experience with my clients. I also have a talent pool of consultants that can support in all aspects of classification, valuation, rules of origin, audits, and forced labor issues. Depth of expertise, integrity driven and compliance focused. Working at the World Customs Organization was an incredible experience. I learned a lot, and I know that with the many challenges and opportunities facing Customs administrations and other border agencies and stakeholders, the work will continue to be exciting and dynamic. What’s were some of the big topics: E-Commerce, Digital Customs, technology innovations for cross border movement of passengers, cargo and parcels, Free Zones work, Protections against trafficking of IP violations, wildlife, cultural items, and other dangerous things, and Trade Facilitation. Much more to do...

    • Dep Assistant Commissioner, Office of International Affairs
      • Aug 2013 - Dec 2015

As the Deputy Assistant Commissioner for the Office of International Affairs, I helped lead the office that manages CBP's international engagement around the world. We deployed personnel around the world to ensure that CBPs mission is promoted and furthered through our relationships with other governments. Our team helped ensure that we set the foundations for successful engagements that promote trade, tourism and security for the US, from every partner country. We supported US governed interests by providing critical capacity building and technical expertise in areas regarding border security, trade facilitation, trade enforcement, free trade agreement verifications, authorized economic operator programs, revenue collection, and so much more. In essence, we are the guardians of our nations borders through our efforts in foreign countries and with foreign partners.

    • Director, Field Operations
      • May 2008 - Aug 2013

As the Director of Field Operations, I served as the principle field manager for Customs and Border Protection for my area of responsibility. In this assignment, I was responsible for all operations, personnel management, labor management, administrative, policy and program management. I led my teams, of well over 1000 employees, to ensure that all aspects of our very complex mission was accomplished, from trade compliance, agriculture compliance, immigration processing and basically ensuring that all good people and things are expedited, while making sure that all bad people and things are filtered out.No one can do this alone, so I relied on my collaboration with stakeholders, other state, federal and local partners and foreign government colleagues to make the most efficient use of our collective resources to ultimately protect the safety and security of our country.

    • Lead Executive-Border Initiatives
      • Mar 2012 - May 2013

In this temporary assignment to Washington DC I have been coordinating CBP's efforts on the Beyond the Border Action Plan with Canada and on the 21st Century Border Management Initiative with Mexico. This unique opportunity has given me invaluable experience in working with many agencies within the US government, as well as with those of our adjacent countries. These initiatives are very progressive and are literally changing how we view border management today and how we are planning for the future. Very exciting!
