Our team of developers, designers, and product owners partnered with the City of Portland Open and Accountable Elections program to build new, open-source software to track campaign finances for the 2020 election. I was the lead researcher for the development of the city and candidate donation tracking, matching and compliance software. OAE provides 6:1 donation matching for candidate participants, with the goal of getting big money out of politics, and enabling candidates to be competitive regardless of capital. Donation matching is already a proven model for a better democracy, but our team built the first open-source software that can be replicated anywhere in the country and at any level of government. We also implemented data visualization of fundraising activities for public transparency. Typically this type of data is difficult to access and is not available until after elections. My role was to conduct generative and evaluative research with City elections officials and campaign staff users throughout the product development process, in addition to some project management, quality assurance, and stakeholder liaising activities.
