New Internationalist is a workers' co-operative which has been publishing a magazine since 1973. They take on one intern a year to work within a small editorial team of co-editors. A large part of my job was on the website. I wrote regularly, as well as presenting and producing a regular podcast. I commissioned and edited content, working with a global pool of contributors. Day to day I also maintained the online editorial content and produce regular analytics reports for the rest of the web team. My other online projects included producing an interactive timeline of New Internationalist's 40 year history. For the magazine I wrote news articles, features and interviews. Subjects covered included migrant rights, breast ironing and LGBT activism in Jamaica. I also sourced photographs and researched background information for the editors. I managed the Argument section of the magazine, dealing with the contributors as well as editing and coming up with ideas. I also manage the reader profiles. Other parts of my role included editing and sending the fortnightly e-newsletter and managing social media activity, including facilitating the social media group, content promotion and interaction with readers as well as analysing activity and helping to formulate strategy. Altogether I spent three weeks working at the Guardian. The first two weeks were spent working across the news, G2, multimedia, consumer and travel sections, researching, sub-editing and writing content for the web and print. I spent my third week solely on the society desk, writing, interviewing, proofreading and doing research. Altogether I spent three weeks working at the Guardian. The focus of my role at the community film company was on the Ironmen of Merthyr project. The film and community work around it focused on the history of boxing in Merthyr Tydfil. I managed the Ironmen of Merthyr website, writing and editing content, looking after day to day maintenance and managing social media channels for the project and the company. I was also responsible for media coverage of the project, writing press releases and speaking to the media. This work resulted in a variety of print and broadcast coverage for the project. In Merthyr Tydfil I helped with animation workshops in schools and conducted interviews with people in the community. As part of this I ran an open day in the local library. Show less
