Bio
Jill Villarreal, Ph.D.
I had the pleasure of mentoring Amy Jo when she was in an undergraduate research internship program at Indiana University the summer of 2002. I found Amy Jo to be extremely bright, hardworking, dedicated, reliable, friendly and outgoing. Amy Jo had a bright smile that would light up the room and had the ability to make everyone around her happy. I was delighted that after the internship she decided to pursue a doctorate degree. Because of shared interests in psychobiology and her friendly nature we have kept in touch over the years. Amy Jo is one of those rare people you meet and say wow I am going to be able to say I knew them when.

Amy Jo and I were colleagues in the Department of Bioethics at the Cleveland Clinic, where we worked together on a few different research projects. Amy Jo's dedication to her job and positive attitude cannot be matched. She devoted herself to her work and tirelessly studied the methods of empirical research in bioethics, while also bringing her neuroscience background to the table. No matter how challenging a task was, she tackled it with a positive attitude - even in the face of setbacks. Outside of her job, Amy Jo was equally driven, completing her dissertation and receiving her PhD after starting with us at the Clinic. Amy Jo Marcano-Reik is one of the hardest-working people I have ever met. I recommend her without reservation on the basis of her exceptional intellect, incredible work ethic, and outstanding attitude toward her work.

Author; Brain and Spinal Cord Plasticity: An Interdisciplinary and Integrative Approach for Behavior
-
Mar 2016 - Present
Please see my recently published book, "Brain and Spinal Cord Plasticity: An Interdisciplinary and Integrative Approach for Behavior, Cognition and Health", published by Nova Science Publishers: Author's Book Description from the Publisher's website: The brain exhibits extraordinarily complex activity and undergoes very rapid change during early development. The ways in which the brain undergoes change during development and interacts with other elements — such as genetics and the environment — can influence behavioral organization. This process of change and the ability to be molded (which is known as plasticity) is important for development, organization, and recovery of function after injury or damage. Through processes involving mechanisms of plasticity, both behavior and cognition can be influenced in many ways important to neurological and psychological function and health. The confluence of brain plasticity, behavior, cognition, and health is complex and requires an interdisciplinary and integrative examination to fully appreciate the biological and psychological implications. The author utilizes this unique approach to review evidence important for behavior and cognition, while addressing important implications for physical and mental health and wellness. Show less
